It was about drugs.

Why don't people realize that Shepard was murdered solely for the reason that they wanted to rob a drug-dealer? Those two jerks would have beaten, tortured and killed anyone else if they had the money and drugs that they wanted. The fact he was gay had nothing to do with it, and I think it is despicable of the media to twist it into a political issue.

It's all buildup. They want to build up and hype a story to sell more newspapers and get advertising bucks. They want to target the gay demographic in this case. A sob story about a 'hate crime' will always get attention, right?

Where on earth did this notion of Matthew Shepard being a "drug dealer" come from? It sure as hell isn't a theory I have ever heard anywhere.

First, it would have been nice to start this discussion with something that is relevant to the actual film, not just an opinion on the case itself. I hesitate on taking the bait, so here goes...

Hrm, don't think so-the facts just don't add up to that conclusion. You obviously must be referring to the ABC special. In addition, the evidence is OVERWHELMINGLY in favor of this being an actual hate crime. At the bar, they were COMPLETELY SOBER when they walked in, and had a pitcher of beer to themselves. The confession tapes clearly don't indicate any inclination that they believed him to be a drug dealer. Their defense team used the "Gay Panic Defense". I could go on and on.

I say present your evidence that this was the sole reason (or was even considered)for this. I assure you, I can counter that. Rewrite history? Try again, it won't work here.

The 3 main characters in the murder were said by believeable residents to have sold and used meth together for some time. Other sources say they all had gay sex on occassion, though for obvious reasons that would be harder to confirm.
