Is this STILL the most recent submarine movie?

It seemed like the 90s was THE decade for submarine movies - Red October in '90, Crimson Tide in '95, that comedy with Kelsey Grammer in '96, U-571 in 2000... then came this movie in 2002.

K-19 is now 10 years old, and in the decade since, I honestly cannot recall any other major submarine movies that have come out. Anybody know of any?

How do you like that piece of satire?

reply

Nothing really major. A few made for TV type things - what was that series recently about the missile sub that went rogue or something?

There was the now canceled ABC-TV series Last Resort which
lasted all of thirteen episodes this past season. I loved
the show and praise it for its authenticity though the
ratings dropped after the first few eps aired and it
never recovered. It is now available on dvd through
amazon.com and I recommend the show to those who have
not seen it.

Which just proves you to be 100% clueless as that show (Last Resort) was so full of bullsh!t. there was NO "authenticity" to it.

Thanks for the heads up on "Last Resort". I found it on Netflix for rental (not streaming).

I wonder why ABC declined a second season? To put on some corny comedy show that prompts you when to laugh? Seems that drama shows are rare on the networks lately unless they are cops and robbers types. While Last Resort wasn't a series needing to go on for years they could have had us all hanging on by expanding on the last 3 episodes.

Most recently there is a Sub movie called Phantom. About the loss of a Soviet Golf Class Sub.

Out of curiosity, how was Phantom?

reply

Haven't seen it. Waiting for DVD release.

reply

Not sure what to make of it given I am sort of 'put off' by David Duchovny & Ed Harris ain't exactly a box office 'draw' for me since he idiotically shot off his mouth about Elia Kazan.

I always feel bad for people like you. It almost like being a racist. All your hangups prevent you from enjoying some of the best things/people in life.

Given my family's history...well, you're welcome to think what you like.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

I don't have an opinion of you, I just feel sorry for people who boycott great things due to petty political and/or prejudicial reasons.

I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise as a person, but I'm still going to see his films(when they appeal to me).

Don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

reply

"Boycott" somebody? I just think Harris is an A-hole...I still watch Abyss & Right Stuff.

So that meant, nothing?

Did Below come before or after this?

reply

Below was released after K-19:The Widowmaker which came out in
June 2002 while Below went directly to dvd and cable later
that year.

It opened in theaters here in my town. I remember seeing it advertised on the marquee.

Ed Harris recently made phantom

Took place in the same time period, and he plays a Russian without the accent.

he was the only exception to a pretty bad film

reply

Black Sea from 2014 is a submarine movie with Jude Law.
Pretty meh though.

I still hold Das Boot (by miles) as the best submarine movie ever made.

Maybe Crimson Tide and The Hunt For Red October a distant second and third, but they are more for entertainments sacke.

reply

Now we got Hunter Killer from 2018 with Gerard Butler and Gary Oldman. Pretty good cast. I thought it was a decent submarine movie.

reply

Another movie is “Kursk” aka command, also from 2018

reply

There's also The Wolf's Call. It's a French submarine movie from 2019.
