Why did they use RPG characters but an FPS engine?

I think perhaps had they had Elementalists and Necromancers walking around they might not now have the fanbase they do(?). I enjoyed this film as a gamer, and as a person interested in the nature of reality. I also loved it as a woman who loves watching women kick ass. For example, Yuki and Bea Kiddo.

There are various games out there that use RPG characters and an FPS engine, so I'm not sure I see the issue. The budget was low, and presumably the story didn't demand magic as part of the game.

In the interview with Oshii on the special features, he describes the original RPG game he got the character types from... I foget which it was. One of the original Nintendo RPGs I think, I don't remember. I think the FPS format was simply to comment on virtual reality, and warfare in general. That society can "lose itself" in warfare, yet go back to leading drab lives, devoid of any "meaningful action" and power that videogame warfare and roleplaying seemingly offer. But I think he mixed the two on purpose to give it a more alien hybrid "futuristic" feel. Oshii is random like that. Why put dogs in all your movies?

I think it was called Wizardry? The group Ash joins are the Wizards.

RPG with a FPS engine to me, is a great mix. Try games such as Deus Ex (with certain RPG elements) and Elder Scrolls III and IV (with certain FPS elements). I now there will be a day (prob sooner than later) in which they will combine both the genres perfectly.

I liked how they did this in the movie, it really made me wish there was some sort of: MMORPG-FPS (Massive Multi-Player Online Role Playing Game / First-Person Shooter)... It would be GRAND!!!

or games like Planetside...and the upcomming Huxley...

Which are MMO-FPS, and you build up your characters stats as you play

These things have been around for years ;)

take a look at Neocron (www.neocron.com) which is an old but half-decent MMORPG-FPS

RPG is exclusivley a genre. FPS can refer both to the genre of first person shooters, but it can also refer to the perspective in the game (i.e first person). There are plenty of RPGs in first person, like previous posters said, a well known example being the Might and Magic games, or Elder Scrolls (Morrowind, Oblivion etc).

Yes, it would be very boring if they just had RPG rules and characters... just like a real RPG lols.

I do like Deus Ex type RPG-shooter-adventure hybrids, but I find RPGs are just dull. Personally.

Great movie, whats interesting is the "real world" which is so drab and depressing that people all spend their lives playing games just to have an escape. I can imagine the future really being like that too - just drab and boring and black-and-white.

There really can be no balance between FPS and RPG hybrid games. Those who are good at FPS games will lvl faster, thus get an even better advantage on top of their talent. It is like giving a heavyweight boxer brass knuckles to fight against a lightweight in standard gloves.

It predicted the evolution of FPS.
