Avalon DEFINITELY isn't for everyone. This, and a few other films by Oshii, can be deadly boring just as easily as they can be profoundly thought provoking. They can seem to one person to be void of anything interesting or worthwhile, and to another be densely layered and thoroughly engaging.
Personally I love the film... watching it is in many ways an interactive experience - I'm watching the visuals, hearing the dialog, and following the storyline, sure, but the slow pace and mood allows me the time and right frame of mind to explore all sorts of tangents of thoughts and interpretations of subtext, and that makes this movie, for me, an extremely entertaining and engaging one to watch.
Like I said, though, it's not for everyone. Some people just don't like putting any of that effort into film watching, and many who do just don't have personalities or tastes that are in line with Oshii's vision. Personally, many of his films resonate with me very deeply.
To anyone who likes Avalon though, I can't recommend Oshii's animated masterpiece "Angel's Egg" ("Tenshi no Tamago") enough. It's brilliant. Read about it first though, it's another love it or hate it film.
