most pompous and self loving movie ever?

i have to say i was impressed how this movie convey the feeling it thinks very high of itself. for an endless amount of time, we have a ooshi masturbating in front of us. what is this ? an attempt at geeky spirituality ? my god, this was awful to endure, and i say this as an avid watcher of strange movies.

Check out Gods and Generals.

Isn't this movie like an anime? Kinda cool but it never really makes any sense? Terrible actors. It's a part vdeo game, a part music vdeo, a part commercial for something. Don't we all get sick and tired of the endless argument of what's real and not??

At the end, my verdict is "who cares"

No, I think that honor would have to go to "Equilibrium."

lol.

As nonsensical as Equilibrium, I actually enjoyed watching the movie. I thought it was a perfect anime/live-action movie and when I compare with Avalon, I consider:

Avalon = Anime, nonsensical, over dramatized, bad acting, visually acceptable, and bore-fest with regurgitate misinterpreted philosophical ideas that have been polluting movies for last a few years.

Equilibrium = Anime action, nonsensical, over dramatized, visually appealing, good convincing acting (Christian bale could have been awesome as Leo in the matrix), interesting concept (gunkata) with regurgitate misinterpreted philosophical ideas that have been polluting movies for last a few years.

But I liked Equilibrium better than Avalon.

if you think avalon is about what s real and what s not, then you didn t watch the movie, you maybe saw it but you didn t watch

reply

Agreed this is way more pompous and arrogant than equilibrium, but still not a bad movie I gave it a 6/10

When there's no more room in hell, The dead will walk the earth...

I agree. The final applause disgusted me as an incredible low level self celebration.
This movie does not make any sense. Moreover, is a Matrix ripoff....

Niente potrĂ  fermarci questa volta!

Well oshi is pritty pretentious, is over obsesed with basset hounds, and is stuck in a rut with the "what is reality thing" but its still a awesome (if slow) movie.

Unless the people that made this movie came out and said they did think very highly of themselves and this movie all that comment really shows is that you are projecting on this movie. Its almost a rediculous comment when you say it out loud (~_^).

This movie is ok... I even found that I enjoyed a good deal of it. It was just that some dupes decided to make a movie that didn't make much sense. And had a ok concept.

yea this was the most boring movie I have every seen. seriously. what the hell. I got all excited to see it cuz it was about video games but when i sat down to see it i was extremely disappointed. i mean, all it is TALK TALK TALK silence..........................talk talk talk silence.............................(2 hours go by). And they re-use the same shots over and over and over again! WTF. and that same god damn music. what the *beep* worst *beep* movie ever.

i saw this moving at a screening in maybe 2002... and yeah, i was CRAZY bored out of my mind, and it's not as though I don't appreciate movies with the same sort of flavour, I do. I don't remember the movie that well, but there was a lot of dialogue that tried too hard and a lot of imagery and whatnot that... tried too hard. The movie is only 106 minutes but it felt like three hours. I think people get really defensive about "confusing" movies, but no, I do enjoy them if only because they make me think... but there was not a whole lot about this film that was engaging whatsoever.

The only part I enjoyed was the song near the end, but such a piece could have been saved for a better film.

Avalon DEFINITELY isn't for everyone. This, and a few other films by Oshii, can be deadly boring just as easily as they can be profoundly thought provoking. They can seem to one person to be void of anything interesting or worthwhile, and to another be densely layered and thoroughly engaging.

Personally I love the film... watching it is in many ways an interactive experience - I'm watching the visuals, hearing the dialog, and following the storyline, sure, but the slow pace and mood allows me the time and right frame of mind to explore all sorts of tangents of thoughts and interpretations of subtext, and that makes this movie, for me, an extremely entertaining and engaging one to watch.

Like I said, though, it's not for everyone. Some people just don't like putting any of that effort into film watching, and many who do just don't have personalities or tastes that are in line with Oshii's vision. Personally, many of his films resonate with me very deeply.

To anyone who likes Avalon though, I can't recommend Oshii's animated masterpiece "Angel's Egg" ("Tenshi no Tamago") enough. It's brilliant. Read about it first though, it's another love it or hate it film.
