Movies similar to this in genre...and non-animation?

reply

Similar? That's going to be tough. I can say that this DVD sits in the honor row of my collection next to Equilibrium, Dark City, and Pitch Black if that helps.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Good suggestions - Equilibrium, Pitch Black, and Dark City are all good suggestions. Have you seen "The Returner" - this is along the same lines (comes in both subtitled or dubbed). The story is a cross between Terminator and Independence day, but with some great and very original gun-fight and action scenes. The "bullet-time" effect has been used, but in a way quite unlike any american movie- and it is very effective. "Volcano High" is another - A kung-fu story about a school, where the students seem to possess some supernatural fighting powers. Often these movies are very under-rated or hard to find because not many people know about them. Good movies anyway, and I suggest you give them a try if you liked Avalon.

Can you please give an IMDB (or anything else) link to this "The Returner" you were talking about, please?

I'm really curious and would love to know more about it, thank you in advance!

reply

Try "Returner" (2002)

If the link below fails - sorry it was my first attempt

hey, i really liked avalon, pitch black, equilibrium, and dark city, but i really didn't care much for returner. the preview made it look really cool but i personally thought it was too childish. but more power to those that like it.
i also thought Versus was awesome, and can highly recommend it. just keep in mind that movie had a 10,000 dollar budget and is based on style, not reality but it can be quite funny as well without being a comedy.

I'm going to have to go with "Titan A.E." Animated, "The Fifth Element" Bruce Willis, and "Final Fantasy: The Spirits within." But others recommended on here are some good ones. Especially Cronenbergs "Exiztenz!" Well Titan A.E. is animated but in a good way, and Final Fanatasy is Photo Realistic, but they are still good.

"Ignorance is Bliss" Please, don't take the girl!

"Equilibrium, Pitch Black, and Dark City"

Dark City - Brilliant. In my opinion, Best Film Ever! My favourite film. 10/10.

Pitch Black - It is OK! It was Boring though, and not very exciting plot-wise. But it did have it's fine moments. 4/10.

Equilibrium - Pretty Good, nothing special and Very Un-Original. But better than Pitch Black, but no way as good as Dark City. 6/10.

try Andrei Tarkovsky's sci-fi "Stalker" (1979). One of Oshii's primary influences is Tarkovsky and it shows in the similarities between Avalon and Stalker.

reply

even COMPARING oshii to that von trier piece of junk is an insult

reply

Your remark is kind of funny Klael, as von Trier is one of Oshii's two favourite directors (the other one being David Lynch).

I liked both Avalon and Element of Crime. Most other von Trier films I don't care for though... the exception being the Kingdom series.

Lynch on the other hand is probably my favourite director.

Lynch RAAAAAAWKS

try natural city, more like bladerunner type story, but similar look, I think.
you may also try cronnenbergs existenz

VERSUS I have to say VERSUS.
I might get flamed but I just can't get enough of the Yakuza, Zombie , Yakuza Zombie thing.
Warning this film is LOW budget, don't compare it to the Matrix for there is no comparison, VERSUS pwns Matrix.

Hey there...

I would recommend Nirvana (the Christopher Lambert flic), The Matrix (of course) and Max Headroom (both the movie and the TV series). All of those have the same philosophical touch to them (well, except for Max, maybe) and fit in terms of visual style and dealing with virtual/ alternative reality...

If you like it rather dysotopian, Stalker, Equilibrium, Brazil, 1984, The Omega Man and Soylent Green would be a good choice...

As for Versus and The Returner... KILLER movies! Definatly worth watching ;)

Hmm... well there is another movie that I can think of that has the same "look and feel" and is -very- Oshii-like and that is "Casshern" by Kazuaki Kiriya.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0405821/

It has the same sort of stylized effects (it's -pure- eye candy) only very much more anime-like (it's practically live-action anime) and a plot that makes you think and keeps you guessing as to what is going on. Much more fast paced than Avalon and -really- good. :-)

eXistenz by David Cronenberg.

reply

Seconded (ten years later). eXistenz (1999) is one of my favorite films. Just to contribute something to this thread I'll recommend Gamer (2009). It has nothing in common with Avalon except that it involves a first-person shooter. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either, it's totally watchable, and okay for repeat viewings. Another recommendation that might work for this thread would be Videodrome (1983).
