She's mentally unstable. She did imagine the whole thing. And they said the postcard was two years old, so she imagined probably the sliding under her door and just gave the cop an old postcard.
She obviously disturbed.
As the above poster said, she did imagine it. Her unstable mind erased the memory of her killing Embry, and again later when she killed Wade.
The postcard was likely already just lying on the floor of her room when she 'saw' it slipped under her door.
I didn't think the cop was all that nice. He was OK to Katie, but he had done some rather unsavory things himself. He hit someone (or something) and never even bothered to investigate it. He is a cop, he could have tested that blood and hair to see if it was human yet he never even bothered.
He promises Katie she can come with him, then reneges on the offer (before he even knew she was crazy).
He didn't deserve to die of course, but none of the men Katie liked were really kind men. They were all jerks.
