'My guidance counselor tried to discourage me...'

Katie tells the interviewers at MacKensie that her guidance counselor tried to discourage her from applying to good schools because she hated her.
She said that she'd be happier staying close to home, going to secretarial school etc.
How is this 'hating Katie'? Maybe this counselor detected more than a couple hints of her mental instability, and thought (correctly!) that staying closer to home would be better for her psychologically.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Eh, guidance councelors are supposed to encourage students to do their best, to aim high. By trying to get Katie to slum it, she really was going against her best interests. If she had other reasons, she could have voiced them, but considering we never even see the character and that is just a small blip in the movie, I think we should take it at face value: the lady was a bitch.

I hear the drizzle of the rain. Like a memory it falls.

I agree if the guidance counselor did do all that, then yes she was a bitch. My guidance counselor was negative so I stopped going to her.

my guidance counselor did the same thing..
starting from day 1 at 9th grade .. called me in to his office and put me in "special help "classes because i am deaf.
i told him to put me in to college prep and if ever messed with my classes again again, i would file a formal complaint with school board and sue his retard ass for fraud.
it turns out it all waste of time. i got my diploma the day before Xmas break that year.
i walked into the guidance counselors office and told him to bend over so i could shove the special ed papers up his ass.

I think that's exactly why the guidance counselor said that to her. She probably didn't want to be too presumptuous but could tell there was something a bit 'off' about Katie and thought she'd be better staying close to home. At the beginning the principal told the cop "This school cares greatly about the reputation of our students." So the counselor probably felt scared she'd lose her job if she started questioning or bad mouthing one of their brightest students. But if she was really smart she would have told other people her assumptions because she was obviously right and Katie needed help. And it's typical for someone sick to call people a bitch if they feel misunderstood. Especially if they are doing something wrong or have done something wrong. She felt the "judgment" from her counselor, and also said "I thought she was a friend" and then felt like she was betraying her. She felt Embry betrayed her as well as thinking the cop would too. It seems like as well as being schizophrenic she had a bit of borderline personality disorder.

Then again, w only have HER word for it that her councilor said that.
Maybe she had some reservations, for obvious reasons, and Katie did not want to hear them.
From that moment on, in Katie's mind, she hated her.
