OK, I COMPLETELY disagree
I don't think Gid was gay. And I certainly don't think he murdered 'Jody'. My guess would be that Gid, as a character, would be just as appalled at the idea of gay sex as any of the other guys in the movie
He tells Roy that he's been with hookers (and apparently one experience, in Odessa, is an especially painful memory), and he is very convincing when he says 'I ain't a man who wants other men'
I think his relationship with his mother as a child, growing up in an orphanage and maybe even foster care, and being alone for pretty much his whole life has made it very hard for him to form attachments, especially with women
Since the only people he seems to become close to are male (mainly cuz of the circumstances of his current life), probably he is more likely to 'love' another guy than a woman. He's most comfortable in the company of other guys, and you become attached to (and sometimes come to love) who you are around. But in his case I don't think that translates to something sexual at all
The filmmakers left it pretty ambiguous (even in the Directors' Commentary version they didn't mention Gid's sexuality at all -- which is like the elephant in the room, and they go 2+ hours without mentioning it) but I REALLY think calling Gid gay and a child molester is totally missing the point of his character
And as for him killing Jody, that's even more ridiculous
He's just a guy on the fringes of society, with few friends, few 'acceptable' social skills (he's friendly but too intense, and his personality traits are just edgy enough to make you uncomfortable from almost the first second he is onscreen), and a huge hole in his heart. I can't remember -- in any movie -- another character who conveyed such an intense desire to just be loved
If the scene where he says 'I've been carnal.... but I ain't never been kissed' doesn't break your heart, you don't have one
In the Directors' Commentary, that was pretty much the ONLY time they weren't talking over the movie. When David Morse got to that line, one of the brothers said something to the effect of 'We promised each other we wouldn't talk over this part'
I think David Morse's performance in this movie is one of the bravest pieces of acting I have ever seen
