Coral was pretty stupid.

The eggs were perfectly hidden, so if she had just listened to Marlin and hid in the sea anemone, the horrible events that occurred wouldn't have occurred.

The story is just flat.

Disney unfortunately has a long tradition of killing off the main characters' moms when they're little. Sometimes it's both parents. There are exceptions to this rule, but honestly, it gets very cliche to kill off the mother after a while.

Sounds like one of the Disney execs must be a fan of the old western genre where it's not unusual for women to die giving childbirth, which is accurate historically speaking (circa 1800s).

Many people theorize that the tradition started with Walt himself, where he grew up without a mom, and it was reflected in his studio's early works. There are also theories that various famous Disney heroes wouldn't have made it if they still had their mothers (which is a mean thing to say, but they have a point).

I was unaware of that Walt Disney fact. Thanks for filling me in.

As for the second part; this may sound like a stretch but I think a lot of it has to do with trying to reflect earlier patriarchal society without having to relegate women, who would otherwise have been noticeable though with less enthralling roles, so they are simply killed off to avoid this practical dilemma. I don't know how much truth there is in that statement; it's just pure speculation on my part.

Ever notice how the strong women featured in lots of Disney films tend to be of the mother-Queen variety, especially the villainesses? Their adamant hostility towards everyone is on par with Roman biblical female figures such as Queen Jezebel and her daughter, Athaliah.

Interpreting biblical accounts scientifically and historically obscures the deeper message of the texts.
