what does duplex mean?

i was wondering why the title was changed in the UK, what the hell does duplex mean?

reply

A general definition is: Twofold; double, and in the case of the movie: having two apartments, divisions, or floors. Mrs Connelly lived in one half of their DUPLEX, get it?

A duplex is a type of dwelling. I guess you don't have them in the UK so the name had to be changed.

They have them in the UK, they just don't call them Duplexes.

But it's basically a single building with two completely separate homes in it. Generally the homes are of equal size.

in British English, "semidetached".

A detached house in the UK is a house with no shared walls. Semi-detached traditionally refers to two houses with a shared wall (any more than two houses attached in a row would be a terrace). This isn't the same as a duplex - a word which isn't commonly used in the UK.
