How does a bullet grazing your ribs put you in a coma?

In the shootout scene where Vin's wife staci is killed. Vin didn't get hit in the head, just a little bit in the ribs. Not enough to even slow him down as he goes outside and beats up one of the killers. Next scene he's in the hospital coming out of a week-long coma!!!!!

The bullet went right through him, when he goes back inside you can see the exit wound. He went into a coma from loss of blood.

Or could be a medically induced coma just to get him stable after surgery.
