How come Charlie Chaplin has an american accent when it's apparent in his later films that his english accent was alive and well?
shareI dont have the film on hand but as I recall he has an English accent. Eddie definitely does have one in real life and I don't recall him not having one in this particular one.

But he's always disapointed me in his film roles.
This is by far his best performance- he seems quite natural. Maybe because he's playing a comic onm his day off. Something I'm sure he knows all about.
Having said that his Avengers bit was very funny, but that was probably more down to Shaun Ryder.
This was the first movie I've seen Eddie actually ACT in, (Mystery Men just...no. Not acting), and he impressed me. The scene where he blows up at Marion is awesome to see because normally you see so much comedy out of him - and that's drama! He's hurt and exasperated and at his wits' end, (hard to imagine for 'Glorious' Eddie!)

To the original poster - as stated above, he has a natural English accent, but sometimes he goes American - I swear, he even goes Southern sometimes when he says the word 'american'. He kind of slurs it like we do.

Eddie is using an English accent. He's just playing it down because his real accent is pretty thick.

shareYes, Eddie s definitely using an English accent. I also thought that Eddie did a decent job with a very difficult role. It was by no means a flawless or great performance but based on all that I have read about the real man, Izzard captured his flirtatious, impish, incisive, and intelligent nature, while Robert Downey Junior's version wallowed in melodramatic, ponderous egotism (and painfully obvious Oscar-baiting). RDJ has become a better actor over the years; I have always felt that Chaplin was one of his weaker performances.
To be honest, there has not been a decent Chaplin portrayal yet. Google images of Chaplin in his prime; for example, google the image in which he is posing for a pic celebrating the formation of United Artists (with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks). In life, Chaplin had BLUE eyes, was of thin build with fair skin and medium-brown hair (in terms of coloring he was more like James McAvoy than RDJ) -- he was not stocky like Izzard and RDJ. He was a handsome man even into his older years. Of course I don't mean that he was leading man handsome compared to another contemporary like Valentino, but he was attractive, and he dressed in well-tailored, elegant clothing. Robert Downey Junior has very dark brown eyes and a darker complexion than Chaplin, and his face was/is much more full (same for Izzard with respect to the full face). Downey Junior mugged his way through the Chaplin film, and honestly I don't think that film has aged well at all. His acting is very ham-fisted and screams "look at MEEEEEEE Oscar voters" and loses the spirit of Chaplin entirely in the process.
Perhaps the OP was confused by the American Robert Downey Junior's (mediocre to poor) version of Chaplin's voice and accent -- which to be frank sounded little like Chaplin himself. And for that matter neither Izzard nor Downey Junior look anything at all like Chaplin appeared without his film makeup in life. I have no idea why the OP thinks that Izzard was using an "American" accent. The OP may have been confused by the difference between Eddie's accent and Chaplin's as heard in his speech in The Last Dictator or in his career Oscar acceptance speech. Chaplin's accent was cultivated -- he was trying to sound rather more posh as he had grown up in quite desperately poor circumstances in London. Izzard turned in a solid performance, as I said earlier not a great one, as he managed to give us some idea of Chaplin as both a real human being caught up in a doomed love triangle and Chaplin as the brilliant actor/writer/director.
