Awards Circuit

Firstly, I'm really very sorry if a similar thread has already been posted, but I was just wondering if this film was ever in contention for any 'foreign film of the year' campaigns due to its apparent critical success upon its release. I'm pretty sure it wasn't eligible for this category in pretty much any major American awards due to it never being officially screened there but does anyone know why it was excluded from the BAFTAs and other European awards at the time? Thanks so much in advance for any info whatsoever!
