Battle of Mitsuko/Kiriyama Should have been longer.

I'm not sure. On the one hand, Mitsuko deserves a memorable finale. On the other hand, the violence in this film isn't meant to be spectacular or cool. This isn't a computer game; characters don't go through progressively harder and longer fights as they work their way up to the final boss.

The violence of Battle Royale is sudden, brutal, clumsy and intimate. There are no action heroes or combat specialists, just kids trying to survive. The fact that Kiriyama seems to enjoy the game is already one of the less topical aspects of the film. If the director indulged this character by giving him long, spectacular fight scenes, all the emotional intensity would be thrown out the window, and we'd be left with just another fight movie.

It is a fascinating battle, because they're both insane and unsympathetic to others (to the point they can't even team up with one another).
