Firefly

I have heard they are very similar. Any thoughts?

reply

i've heard that also, but how are they similar. i had never heard of this show untill i heard some a$$hole ranting about how "Firefly is a rippoff of Outlaw Star." i've never seen this show, so i'd really like to know how the two shows are alike.

Firefly is a Joss Whedon (from Buffy Fame) tv show that lasted all of one season due to the exessive spending...

BUT Firefly is more like cowboy bebop than Outlaw star, since thier arnt any aliens... and its all about bounties and the hunting of said bounties... instead of finding of a ship and battling pirates and magic whelding guys, and try to beat them to a galactic leyline.

I'm a huge Firefly fan, and I just recently saw the first episode of Outlaw Star. Yep, they are very similar, but very different as well.
No aliens or robots in Firefly.
Both of the first episodes end with a girl in a box.
So, yeah.

I'd say they were similar, but I wouldn't go so far as to say that Firefly is an Outlaw Star rip-off...

"There's a hole in the world. Feels like we ought to have known."

reply

yeah i thinks its more of a hommage to anime than a rip-off

I started watching firefly and found outlaw star after watching that. actually i saw one episode of outlaw star like 4 years ago and was finally lead back to it. My question is what episode of firefly was mel's song used in, and was it something Joss purposely took from outlaw or is it just a folk song that is a conicedence

reply

What in God's name are you talking about? Firefly didn't have any Outlaw Star music in it, and vice versa.

reply

It was a folk song made for the show called "Mal's Song" not "Mel".

Any anyway, if anyone wants to read about the similarities, check out this site:

I'll confess, I've never seen Cowboy Bebop, not for lack of interest, and I haven't seen Outlaw Star recently, but I have watched, and am a fan of both Outlaw Star, Firefly, and Serenity. Something that you need to keep in mind is that, a lot of Cowboys in space shows/movies are a lot alike, and sometimes they borrow off each other. The characters in both are very similar, but at the same time, very unique.

Plus, as my mom just pointed out about thirty seconds ago while reading over my shoulder, the story of a bunch of different people on a boat/ship trying to hold themselves together dates all the way back to The Illiad, basically slightly newer genres standing on the shoulders of older genres, which makes sense cause there are only so many plotlines in the universe. Eventually, there are copies. The question isn't whether or not it's a copy rather than is it a good copy without risking plagiarism?

Cowboy Bebop and Firefly are similar in the sense that its in space with cowboys, on planets that have been teriformed, and the hero's do dirty work basically. Firefly is about Smugglers and the people on the ship who aren't like them. Its probably the best TV series i've ever seen. Very funny and touching sometimes too. The movie as well (Serenity) is also very cool. I've never seen Outlaw Star, but i'd assume that cowboys in space is just a popular notion these days.

reply

*terraformed, *heroes, *smugglers, and don't give an opinion on how alike these two shows are when you've only seen one.

reply

The only similarity is that there's a girl in a box.

Look up Blake's 7. Created in 1978 bears similiarties to Firefly, Outlaw Star, and Cowboy Bebop. Coincidence? Possibly, more likely that it is.

Maybe also compare Starhunter (2000) .(which some called a Firefly ripoff,
even though it premiered a couple years before Firefly). 

Beyond the girl in the box, there are a few other similarities. Both shows feature a rag-tag crew of people from different backgrounds just eking out a living on the frontier of space. Outlaw Star is more centrally focused with the leyline story, whereas a lot of Firefly episodes are fairly standalone.

Both series feature a strange dichotomy of power in space, composed of order and chaos, however the two aren't formally at war. The Alliance and the Space Forces represent order with the Reavers and the Pirates representing chaos. Folk like the crew of Serenity and Outlaws would represent the rest; large numbers, but not centrally organized and loyal to neither side. Mind you, the roles are of varying importance; Pirates play a huge role in Outlaw Star, whereas the Alliance and the Reavers' roles aren't so large in Firefly, but still more important than that of the Space Forces in Outlaw Star

However, there are tons of differences. Firefly has no aliens or magic, or no central story arc. Plus, the crew of Serenity is more seasoned than the Outlaw Star, which seems to get by more on luck.

A single spark can start a spectral fire.

There are many similarities but if you get enough shows in any genre, in this case more of a space cowboy theme you're bound to see similarities between series. Sometimes it's a coincidence, sometimes a homage, sometimes it's just inspired by another series.
