Not very good

Just didn't enjoy it at all, the story wasn't interesting and the elements of horror were really badly done. Anyone thinking of watching this should watch A Tale of Two Sisters instead much better and story and definetly more spookier.

I agree, I find this film to be overrated. Don't get me wrong, it's a great movie, but IMO it's the worst in the series (even though WIshing Stairs is kinda bleh too). I still don't see how many, many people find this to be by far the best in the series...but I find the first and fourth one to be the better ones. I g uess my taste differs from a lot of people then, lol.

If you judge this film as one episode of a scary movie series, you're right. It's not very good as a scary movie.
The directors told that they never liked the horror genre, and they had no intention to make one.
But the fans of this film don't see as a horror film.

reply

I liked the movie in general but the ending was terrible regardless of what genre you'd categorize it under.

reply

I don't see this movie as a horror movie I think if you do it's not a great horror movie but think of it more as a drama with the supernat on the sidelines and it's a great movie.
This movie was the 1st of it's kind in Korea and for that I give it credit.

Totally agree with Yuna Fantasy.
Was expecting a horror movie of Whispering Corridors kind when I rented the Memento Mori DVD. Well, Memento Mori is not scary, but much much better than what I had expected it to be.
I would say most people when they watch this film expect it to be scary, and some get disappointed when it isn't. But think of it as a heartbreaking yet beautiful love story, you might change your mind.

reply

I don't necessarily expect these 'horror' movies to be 'scary', I like the interesting imagery and creepiness.

reply

It seemed very flat, with no pace at all and a very fractured, almost non-existent plotline. In a word: drab. The only thing I found creepy was the mawkish predictability and amateurish overacting.
I lost interest after about twenty minutes and my eyes glazed over after an hour. It was a real effort to stay even slightly interested to the end.
Not a patch on All About Lily Chou Chou or MPD Psycho in the teeny trauma stakes.

I had almost exactly the same impression, Melon. And hey - there's a fourth one? What's it called?

Anyhow, I've seen the first three and I like Momento Mori better than Wishing Stairs, less than Whispering Corridors.

MM amazed me in that I too had read all of the raves saying it was the best of the series (usually appended with "...by far,") and was disappointed by the lack of an expected slam-dunk horror element. The amazement comes from the fact that the drama that unfolded instead completely won me over, despite that disappointment.

The story, though a tragic melodrama, was intense enough to suck me in, and the acting on the part of everybody in this film is nothing short of phenomenal. It's been a long, long time since I've seen a cast so thoroughly convincing you have to remind yourself that "these people are acting."

Another unexpected pleasure is that the soundtrack has three incredible piano pieces, accessible via the Special Features menu. The one titled "17" actually choked me up - raises the concept of "moving" to a whole new level - and the main theme is a masterpiece of film music.

Whispering Corridors had the best horror content; Wishing Stairs had scarier scenes than MM but WS' story and characters themselves were less interesting.

I want to see that fourth one, but I need a title!

Also, different tastes for different palates and all, but I think "Tale of Two Sisters" was the most worthless and pretentious crap I've been subjected to in at least a decade - two hours stolen from my life that I'll never get back...

The title of the 4th one is "Voice". I've seen it and it is ok...nothing great, nothing terrible.

I love the series and my favorite is Wishing Stairs, but if I were to choose the best of the series then it would be Memento Mori. What I love most watching these films are the school girls and there everyday chatting and hanging out when they are at resses, in the bathroom, lunchroom etc. This is why I watch it, I just find it hilarious seeing these girls have quarrel with eachother. The best one for me is in Memento Mori when the short girl wants to check her height again and the rest of the girls start laughing when she finds that she is still the same height. I hope they continue with another one to add more to the series.

A tale of two sisters has nothing to do with the whole school girl genre, but A tale of two sisters is defintely the best of it's kind.

I really enjoyed the film, but I think it could have done without the supernatural element. I was completely enthralled with its simplicity and quietness and then the end came and I found myself laughing and not paying full attention for the first time. I didn't view it as a horror film either and that addition threw me off. It wasn't bad with the bathroom door slamming and not opening, because that had a simplicity and realness to it as well but once they added the elements of supernatural sounds, people seeing her ghost, it became cheesy. I love cheese, but only when it's an obviously cheesy movie, not when it's one that takes itself seriously or at least that I took seriously up to that point.

Agree completely. It was fairly interesting, but not particularaly enjoyable at all apart from a few fun bits (like the meassuring scene where the girl headbutts the pointer), plus it was hardly what I would call a horror film. A real shame that this replaced the brilliant R-Point on my course.

reply

True this wasn't really a horror unlike the 1st in the series but they only share the name.
Memento mori is hyped because it is beautifully made it has quite A unique story and it is just diffrent to the run of the mill stuff.
I too was disapointed about the lack of horror but what i got made up for it

The movie I am reminded the most watching this is Ring O. Both movies were tragic dramas with horror elements. But I preferred Ring O in all aspects: horror wise, Ring O was spookier, and drama wise, I felt more Sadako than Hyo-shin (sorry).

reply

it was just TOO melodramatic

didn't like it very much either
