I think they should've made Francesca a little older, like about 21. I think her being 18 was a bit too young, even though she is considered legal. Does anyone agree?

shareNot at all. I think the 'jail bait' thing was part of her appeal to him, and also emphasised that she was a fling rather that a real alternative to his girlfriend.
Why a little older? To make it more morally acceptable to the American public? How is Francesca's young age detrimental to the plot? The film was never distributed in the US but in the much less prudish Italian and European markets...

I agree. Not because 30 year old men don't necessarily hook up with 18 year old women, but more because her hyper attraction to him just seemed too unrealistic to me. He wasn't that great looking, and their "relationship" just didn't ring true at all on any level.
