An Italian film of the same era with similar style, theme and quality is:
Don't Move (2004) http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0330702/

This is NOT a good italian movie.

However there are many GOOD italian movies, similar to some extent.

Try the romantic comedies where Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren teamed up for a start.
or some of the films by Dino Risi, Monicelli, the films by De Sica after his neo-realist period, or some of the works by Fellini, Bertolucci, etc.

Those are good, even excellent films, this is not.

Are you sure you're not just showing your age? All the movies you mention are decades old. So Italy hasn't produced a single good movie since you were young, is that what you're saying?

I thought L'ultimo Bacio was an agreeable bit of fluff, redeemed by good acting and directing. It's not a great film but I consider it a good one.

I'm italian so i can recommend u a couple that i really enjoyed: La finestra di fronte (facing windows) and Le fate ignoranti, both by ozpeteck (the director is actually turkish). Some of the actors are the same of L'ultimo bacio. Another very good one is canone inverso (making love), italian director but english speaking actors.
Unfortunately i haven t lived there for quite long so i can t help u any further... by the way Muccino just made the sequel of L'ultimo bacio, it's called baciami ancora but the reviews are not great.

Facing Windows was good. Giovanna excelled in that film. But L'ultimo bacio is a much better film imo. In fact I think this film is a masterpiece and does not get enough attention in America as a great foreign film.
