Why didn't he just try betting money on a horse in the first place?


Compared to committing dangerous crimes, it sounds like a reasonable option. As we see in the end, it works pretty well too. I understand that if they did this, there would be no movie, and that's kind of my point. Why make a movie where the plot is so dumb?

Why not just tell her to get a student loan like most other people do?

Or that if she got student loans, that he'd pay them while she was in college?

Because 29/30 tries, he would lose all that money he is betting. Gambling is ok if you have the money to spare and feeling like investing it in a short term, high risk chance at making more, but trying to come up with money that you need by gambling it is a horrible idea.
