Ehh... What does everyone find so special about this film?

Before you ask, I understand that the humor was deadpan (and I laughed frequently), but I wasn't as intrigued as others led this up to believe, and was wondering what it is that they see in it?

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I enjoyed the movie because I enjoyed the characters. With all the garbage I've seen, and all the garbage there is to watch these days, I found the Tenenbaums to be refreshing.

The soundtrack was also pretty decent.

While I can't say what 'everyone' finds so special about this film, I can only assume it's appreciated by people who enjoy a change of pace, and Anderson movies are always unique.

I enjoyed the message: that even a fractured family having long fallen from grace can still find a way to come together.

Can't stop the signal.

For me, it was a combination of factors: Anderson's ability to swing us from laughter to near-tears and back again, quirky sympathetic characters, fantastic dialogue that goes over the top just enough to show how delightfully inappropriate the characters could be, and the packaging...the unique narration, with memorable music, colors, etc.

I agree with the previous replies. I'll just add that I like it even more each time I watch it.

I think there are a lot of layers which at one level are the theater of the absurd....But at another level ring true for the viewer.

Take for example the board game closet....Such a family with such superstar children still played all of the same board games we played....so we can relate. The were just like us....imperfect....Yet the still are a family..and have all of the family dramas and concerns.

OP, I can kind of relate to what you're saying. Because when a friend and I first screened this film, at its conclusion we both slowly turned to look for each other's reaction. We were both stunned; as if we both were thinking: What the.heck.was.that?! lol!

Was that a drama? A comedy? A 'dramady'? A 'comedra'?

Then, we immediately watched it again...and all the film's subtle humor and layers started to come thru, and we wound up cracking up.

Then we watched it again...(okay, full disclosure) we smoked a joint, and then watched it. And it was just hysterical. 

It's quirky.
