Dennis Quaid was 48 and playing a 35 year old

Why did they cast 48 year old Dennis Quaid to play a much younger 35 year old man? I realize Jim Morris is suppose to be "over the hill" compared to the 19-22 year olds that are generally major league rookies, but come on. Its like they were hell bent on selling Morris as an old man, when in fact he was only "old" in regards to pro sports.

Yes. Dennis was almost 50 playing a part meant for an almost 40 year old. I guess the producers didn't want an unknown to star in a major role. There wasn't an actor that would fit the part in the right age bracket. They should have made the movie in 1992 when Dennis was the right age. He looked good in "Parent Trap".

They couldn't have filmed this story in '92 because it didn't happen until '99 (it is based on a true story, ya know.). And Charley Sheen was about the right age in '02. He's a righty, that's true, but they could've flipped the negative, but he had excellent mechanics in Major League.

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

who cares. i didnt know he was 48. it was believable that he was 35 in the movie.

I do't know why they did that, plus he is older then the real Jim Morris, which is a rareity since the actors that play a real life person in a movie, are younger then the real life person. The casting director must have been sitting around to think of whom they could get to play Jim Morris. And plus the fact he met him look older then he really was.

reply

I couldn't even tell Dennis Quaid was 48.. I guess thats why.

reply

He wasnt playing 35, Jimmy Morris was 39 at the time, I know its not much difference but still.

reply

Morris was 35 when he made his major league debut. I'm thinking they cast Quaid for realism; he pitched at one time. Worth it imo because there's nothing worse than a sports movie with actors who clearly aren't athletes.

Now I know what my unfinished business is.
What?
You.

According to Baseball-Reference.com he was born in January of '64 and debuted in Sept. of '99. He was originally drafted by Milwaukee in '83.

Quaid is:
1) a very good natural athlete
2) left-handed
3) looks much younger than he actually is (not to mention it doesn't hurt that he is considered by many people to be very good-looking).

Presto! He's cast as the lead in the "The Rookie."

I found it interesting that he was only 8 years younger than the guy who played his dad. Goes to show that if you take care of yourself, thats the ultimate anti-aging secret.

Kinda like Sally Field being only 10 years older than Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump.

Not to mention the 12 year difference beteween Sean Connery and Harrison Ford in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade... or, to use an extreme example, Dick Van Dyke being seven months OLDER than his "father" Lionel Jeffries in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Supermodels...spoiled stupid little stick figures mit poofy lips who sink only about zemselves.

I was thinking all this when watching the movie last nite. I watched the feature on the real guy and man- he was out of shape and didn't look too hot. I do think Quaid was a bit old but still believable as he is much more fit and youthful- you can shave at least 5 yrs off him. Also- it doesn't hurt to intensify the age bit.

reply

Major league rookie pitchers are rarely 19-22 years-old, and position players are usually older than that, too. The kids at the tryout, that's a different story.

As for why a 48 year-old, wrinkle-necked Randy Quaid played a 35 year-old; that's Hollywood, baby! And it may have been to amplify the age difference.
