So, um...

Even though it is not directly mentioned, it is heavily implied that Ripley's Game follows on from Talented. The latter, however, takes place in the 1950s where RG is set in the present day. I know Malkovich isn't exactly young, but in theory the guy should be at least in his 60s... Did Tom Ripley age ridiculously well or what?

Well, I think that Ripley's Game isn't a literal sequel to The Talented Mr. Ripley. None of the cast or crew who worked on it worked on the previous movie, so they didn't really worry about making them fit together properly.

Still...neither film actually specifies the year it takes place, so what if The Talented Mr. Ripley takes place in the late 50s/early 60s, and Ripley's Game takes place in the early 90s? Then you're only talking about a 30 year gap between the two, as opposed to a 50 year gap. If Ripley's in his early 20s in the first film, he'd be in his early 50s in the second, which is believable.

Except they drive relatively new Alfa Romeo and BMW's.

It's not a sequel. Another bunch of people made a movie from a related book about the same character.

And there were other Ripley adaptations before Damon's movie; he doesn't set any kind of benchmark.

This wasn't a sequel, but a reboot. And so was RIPLEY UNDER GROUND.
