Yes.

reply

Yeah.

I liked it... creepy... but not real horror... not very graphic, gory ,etc.

reply

No, the book is fascinating though.

Don't know if I would describe this as a "good" movie, but it grew on me over time. I couldn't help but love the creepy, disturbing atmosphere created by the direction and music.

reply

It's a tense, atmospheric, well-acted movie, with a thin, improbable plot.

It's way better than it had any right to be. Which makes it good, rather than great.

I can say it's a better film when you're older. I watched it around the time it was released and then revisited it about 16 years later and I enjoyed it much more the second time around. I think it's a film that takes a degree of maturity to fully appreciate.

The plot is, I suppose, as improbable as that of any other supernatural mystery/thriller. If you're open to the existence of the paranormal, that no doubt helps to really get into the movie.

I had to watch it twice--once around the time of release and then again about a year ago--before I realized I liked it. But after this most recent viewing, I can say that I do like the film and find it to be an interesting movie, especially considering its ties to real-life events.

This is a thinking man's thriller and not a cheap slasher where a monster just goes around killing shit.

reply

Just like anything, especially movies, it depends on your personal tastes.
I enjoyed it and found it creepy at times and mysterious.

reply

Agreed. It being based on a true story adds a certain amount of intrigue as well.

I've considered reading the book it's based on but haven't gotten around to it. I've heard it's interesting.

I liked it when it first came out, as an artistically made mystery/thriller that's simultaneously creepy and reverent (it's definitely not some lame SyFy flick); but I wasn't necessarily crazy about it. I've seen it three times since and it's become one of my favorites of the genre (or any genre), which shows that it has depth and growing power. As PrimeMinisterX said elsewhere, it's a movie that you'll likely appreciate more as you mature.

I suggest checking it out and then exploring its insights and possible interpretation, which you can read about on this thread: https://moviechat.org/tt0265349/The-Mothman-Prophecies/5b2a8fdd0293c300149a9ba5/Insights-about-the-mothmen-from-clues-in-the-film-SPOILERS
