60's Cold War Soviet Russian Theme ?? *spoiler*

I watched this for the first time last night, at first I was thinking wow, this movie looks like it's gonna be pretty darned good.. Ok, some of the stunts, fx and dialogue was very amateur and cheap, but I was intrigued by all the Soviet Cold War style surroundings going on, like the Soviet Style Propaganda type 'Love ya Motherland' type Posters on the Walls in the NSA offices, the commy soviet style uniforms, the drabby greyness decor, the clunky 60's Russian'esque knobs and switches on computer terminals, the old 50's and 60's style Russian Cars with Russian plates.. Im assuming it was all meant to be taking place in the US, but why all the Cold War era Soviet theme.. I was eagherly waiting for some sort of explanation to all this stuff, more so than the actual outcome of the vampire story going on. I was thinking, are we gonna be informed that at some point in the Past the Soviets conquered the United States, and thus some technologies and styles remained Cold War era style.. What was it all about? The movie ends, but, it never got explained, wahhhhh, what a shame... Such a waste of an interesting sub story, an opportunity missed if you ask me...

Any thoughts anybody? Or, were we not meant to think about all that stuff and simply be satisfied with the dodgy low budget Vampire escapade..???

I also loved the Soviet-esque feel of the movie. I don't think it really requires much explanation, it's better left to viewers imagination. On the commentary track, though, Oblowitz says that it's more like present day with alternate history than future. Nevertheless, the cold totalitarian feel of the movie is one reason why I love it.

Indeed :-)

Hey, can ya name other movies with a similar sort of 'Cold Totalitarian' feel to them?

reply

Well, the first ones to come to mind are Terry Gilliam's Brazil and 12 monkeys. They have quite similar feel to them, Oblowitz actually admits that some scenes of Brazil had great influence over the style he tried to achieve with The Breed, namely the bleak cold war style.

'Equilibrium' is another example.

2006's perfect creature, its got vampires, humans and vampire buddy cop drama, and in general is very similar to this movie

This is YOUR LIFE and it is ending one minute at a time!

I had assumed it was alternative history too (given how recent the Holocaust memories are intended to be) rather than the 'distant future of the reviews and synopsis on IMDB.

Anyway, Cold Totalitarian/distopian settings ... there is a film called Fatherland (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2998443520/tt0109779) set in the 50's or 60's in a world where Germany won WWII. The first ten minutes of the film is presented in a documentary stle to 'set up' the background and it is done pretty well.
