a very weak vampire film

So, first off, I love vampire films. There's just something about the underground culture and the dark, lonely, sadistic feel to them that I can relate with. I found this film at walmart for five bucks and figured why not buy it, it is about vampires. Mistake. The movie does not hold up to prior vampire films and if just didn't do anything for me. The acting was pretty bad, the dialogue was bad, and the whole plot just wasn't that exciting. I would suggest not watching this movie. Unfortunately, I now own this film, but probably won't ever watch it again. The only good parts were Gray's flashbacks. Lates.

I don't think it's weak as much as it's very surreal and abstract, very orwellian. The thing about this film is that it's very different. It's not the typical vampire movie. You're not getting Interview with the vampire or Dracula, nor are you getting Blade but rather a vampire story in the style of George Orwell. It's more artistic than scary, very metaphorical even if the nazi comparison is a bit heavy handed and obvious but in today's world I suppose you have to be obvious.

Yeah it stunk, glad it was free on Fearnet. I saw this movie for $3 once and almost bought it. Glad I skipped it!

This is not a "vampire film", that is why you are disappointed. It is a quite surrealistic, which takes place in an alternative universe (a communist USA).
For its budget this movie is quite acceptable.
As you wrote, it is a very weak vampire movie, exactly because it is not meant to be one.

I personally enjoyed this film and cannot understand why so many people seem to dislike it. It's by far Oblowitz's best movie (which isn't sayng much though).
I found the style and the whole idea of vampires being a sort of oppressed race intriguing and the subject was handled quite well. Also, as an achievement, this movie is HUGE, since the crew had a budget of only $3 million (according to the audio commentary). I've seen many $20 million movies that look a lot cheaper. I say give it a chance.

I saw this film only once (unfortunately), but I loved it immediately. The atmosphere and the strange scenes were fantastic. I thought it will be a vampire movie. It was a mistake. This film is more...

This is a brilliant film within its scope and was a very pleasant surprise. The only reason peopel dislike it is because they were expecting another b-movie shlockfest more akin to their level, and got this instead. Oh well.

I must agree with aweigh-1. I had grown quite used to the crap the SciFi channels serves up late night through my fits of insomnia and I expected this to be no different. But I'm a fan of horror and scifi, even bad horror and scifi so crap is ok sometimes. But this film really surprised me.

It doesn't have the style, energy or choreography (or budget) of Blade, but I would rate it a cut above Underworld, Queen of the Damned and several other higher profile vamp movies. I liked the writing, the liked the complexities of the characters and I liked the underlying themes dealing with racism and class. Woodbine's performance, notable because he is the lead, probably does fall short, (he doesn't seem to represent the character's motivation strongly enough) but I thought its uniqueness and style brought enough to the table to outweigh its shortcomings. And I didn't know what was up with the green color grading. Are we in the Matrix? I'm not sure what that was supposed to represent so I didn't care for it, but nonetheless the offbeat, cop buddy drama/romance masquerading as a vampire flick gets a thumbs up from me.

I didn't like it. It's that simple. I'm not saying anything against anyone who didn't like it, and I'm not advocating that you don't go and watch it because as already demonstrated, many people enjoyed it and many more people will continue to do so.

But I, for one, am after either end of the spectrum when it comes to vampire films - A) aesthetics and action (for those sleepless nights - we've all had them), or B) deep and meaningful drama, horror, plot, etc. Not somewhere in between.

And call me weird... but I like decent acting in a film. Have a skilful cast, this film did not. I hate to say this, but it was almost cringeworthy at times. And I'm a fan of Evil Dead, so it's a stretch for me to say that...

People will no doubt rag on me for this comment, but hey, let the fury fly.

Yeah It sucked.

It wouldn't be a vampire film if it didn't suck, but this was one pretty bad as well. I think this film had some great visuals and atmosphere, but the weak performances and choppy direction were very jarring.

The whole movie was pretty bad. Surprised how much trash movies are shown on television lately. Adrian Paul is not a great actor.

No more IMDB boards for me!
