I agree it's one of the best. "Platoon" is still my favorite, but this is a close 2nd

reply

yeah platoon is a good one too, but this had more influence on me. :)

reply

This movie really made you feel like you were in the *beep* wth them, very well done.

reply

I agree. This is my favorite besides Tears Of The Sun.

reply

that's exactly what i wanted to say!

reply

I also gave it a 10.
After this movie, I think that from now on for non war movies (say, romances, thriller, dramas) that I like very much and are very well done, I will give a 9 at most.

reply

i am looking forward a war movie which can beat this one!

Movie ratings are unique to the individual and I am not trying to take away your opinion but....

Blackhawk Down simply isn't a very good movie. Yes, it depicts an actual event but that doesn't make it a good movie in and of itself. It spends the vast majority of time, and it is a long time, in nothing but street battle scenes. Yes, they are well done but it is as if that is all there is to the movie.

Consider "D-day, The Sixth of June" for example. That movie also depicted an actual event but from the prospective of a number of views. The Americans (enlisted and officer), the Germans (also regular soldiers and low and high-ranking officers, including a couple of pilots who made it to the beaches) and various European forces including the Free French and British. D-day showed actual battle footage in addition to backstories on how combat affects not only the winners but the losers, high ranking officers and low-level foot soldiers. It was so much more complete than Blackhawk Down where there was no effort to describe the Somali combatants. Instead they were shown as faceless ant-like figures who marched to their deaths without cause or emotion.

Consider a movie like "Tora, Tora, Tora" which investigates both sides and events leading up to a climatic battle. The perspective is profound whereas in Blackhawk it is just exploitative special effects.

Blackhawk Down is a very shallow war movie and is virtually identical to a hundred of other 'B' war movies produced about WWII and the Korean War showing nothing but gory battle scenes and not much else. It is well done technically but boring, repetitive and way too long.

Its not bad but severely lacking in story. The mission is supposed to capture the 2 politicians. We don't even learn if they are captured or not! The primary story line just disappears and then turns into a human war drama lol

reply

The primary story WAS a human war drama.

There is, unseen by most, an underworld...a place that is just as real, but not as brightly lit...

Well that IS the point: They went to make a 'routine arrest' of a couple of Habr Geder militia honchos & things just 'fell apart'--the point of the story is how they coped with the war that suddenly just engulfed them.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Its hard to select the best of films without an objective standard--sales, # of countries where the film was shown, etc. But I can put Blackhawk Down among the top five war movies based on these criteria: the inherent drama of the facts described, the verisimilitude of the action sequences and the military lesions learned. The other four I can suggest are:
We Were Soldiers Once and Young
Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (SK)
Saving Private Ryan
The Last of the Mohigans.

Not sure if it's the best, since I really like Platoon, The Battle of Algiers, Three Kings, and Saving Private Ryan as well.
