Hector--A big mess

Okay, here's a question that I have about the movie within the movie.

The little you see of Time over Time, there's a musical number between Hector and Gwen, the scene that Eddie gets jealous about because of Hector being all over Gwen.

So, here's the problem. At the junkett when the press and everybody's watching the movie, Hector gets up and starts talking about his package, and Hal looks at him and says, "Who are you?"

If Hector was IN the movie that Hal directed, and much of the final movie was about Gwen's and Hector's affair, wouldn't Hal KNOW who he is? Wouldn't Hal know him quite well?

The possibility occurred to me that Hal was just saying, "Who are you to tell me--whatever" that sort of thing, but it just doesn't seem like that's how he meant it. It seems like Hal honestly had no idea who this chucklehead was.

Do you mean alzheimer's?

I think he meant it as "who the hell are you to me"?

That's a famous put-down used in Hollywood when someone who is a "nobody" attempts to appear important or even dares speak up when they should not. There are many unwritten rules in Hollywood and if you break one before you have earned your status, you will be reminded that you are a "nobody". And that is often done by asking the person bluntly: "Who are you?" as in "Who the hell are you to voice your opinion???"
