pure entertaining genius

I just saw this movie on channel 4 and i thought it was realy great the script was funny and inteligent and the acting was great. Film is a sorce of entertainment and this film did exactly that. who agrees?

reply

Not me. I was also watching it on Channel 4.

I spent 20 mins waiting for anything to happen. When it did it was a very cheap and irrelevant sight gag of a doberman attacking a window cleaner.

When you've got such a large cast of excellent and bankable A-listers and you have to do that to get things going it's time to go to bed. So I did.

This is one of the most genius movies I have ever seen. Sure, there are some downfalls, but the writing is incredible, and most of the acting, too. This is one of the most underrated films of all time, in my opinion.

reply

I didn't think it's absolute genius, but I certainly enjoyed watching it. I would definitely agree it's underrated, though.

This is a great film, Roberts and Cusack are on top form, Zeta-Jones in probably her best role and Crystal clearly enjoying romping around in the film he helped write and produced. I think there are moments of comedy genius and this is one of those films you can watch over and over again and never get bored of. Brilliant.

I loved it! I think the lines are hillarious and witty. The characters are fabulous. I think the mix of actors is wonderful as well.

reply

At best, this film is just OK. It is certainly not "genious". It is highly predictable and lightweight and a lot of the comedy completely misses the mark; and Zeta Jones can't act for toffee! Having said that, it is quite an entertaining and sweet yarn and it's chock full of big names. If you want to switch your brain off for a couple of hours and there's nothing much on TV, you could do worse than watch this film. Anyone who thinks it's "genious" though must have a very low IQ indeed!

reply

I wouldn't talk about IQ levels when you can't even spell genius correctly.

I'm always entertained by this movie whenever it's on T.V. I've seen it probably over 10 times, yet I still watch it whenever I see that it's on. I just love the chemistry with all of the actors, and it's got some great lines that always make me laugh. I'm also a sucker for John Cusack.

I agree. I thought the breakfast scene was hilarious where Julia Robert's character tunred to food for comfort. Billy Crystals' quickfire lines were brilliant. So many times I laughed out loud. Who cares if the storyline was obvious. It was a great hilarious time watching it. And Julia and Zeta do comedy so well.

reply

"Who cares if the storyline was obvious"...

Indeed... this is a romantic comedy folks... the storyline is ALWAYS obvious, that's sort of the point.

reply

I loved it! Great writing! VERY underrated, it deserves a lot more credit...

reply

LOL, right on about not being able to spell genius.

Kiki: [imitating Gwen] Kiki? Kiki-kins? Who's smoking? I smell smoke. Is someone smoking within a six mile radius of where I'm standing! Stop them Kiki, stop them!

Julia's tolerant but knowing, mental eye rolls at Gwen's fake displays were incredibly well done. All her subtle facial reactions to Gwen and others were excellent!

CZJ did a great job acting a spoiled selfish brat and when she pretended being generous and caring, it was the best of all...so perfectly plastic. She played plastic well.

reply

Word. Everything that you said.

reply

I agree. I don't know why so many people didn't like this film. Maybe it was a little too "inside" for the average filmgoer, I don't know, but I totally "got" this film and found it deliciously entertaining from start to finish.

think this film is a love it or loathe it

i love it lol think you either get its humour or you don't.

Heaven help me, i love a psychotic

reply

I loved it, too. Very easy 10/10 from me. I can't believe that I'd somehow overlooked it until now--I don't even recall ever hearing about it prior to a couple weeks ago, and it has a large numbers of "favorite actors" in it for me . . . which I guess just goes to show how little I go over filmographies with a fine-toothed comb, or at least how crappy my memory is or something.

Anyway, I was surprised to see that apparently quite a few people dislike or even hate the film instead. But I guess that's why it's not talked about enough that I would have noticed it earlier. I know a number of other folks who I think will dig it who I bet also never heard of it before, so I'm off to pass the word on about it.

I liked it and I thought it was very entertaining. It has a simple story and it's made for comedic purposes. I think it did its job very well indeed.
