Why did everyone have such red lips throughout? Was this supposed to be symbolic?

I'm watching now on HBO and ONLY the young sexy people both male and female particularly the 3 high schoolers, 2 boys and the girl, have the red lips. Someone used eroticism. Gosling in almost every scene is LL COOL J Licking, seething, and billy idol piecing his lips unlike any other movie he's been in.
