This film was blatantly homophobic

This kid was presented as gay, or at least bi at the beginning of the movie, but all he needed was his hot neighbor to jump in the shower with him and he became a "normal", well functioning member of society. Maybe instead of parents sending their kids off to camps to make them straight, they should just hire a sexy neighbor to jump in the shower with them.

I kind of wondered about that too.

So he didn't really work for Bayou Beavers? - Hatchet

I don't think he was presented as gay at all, people just presumed he was because he wore make up and maybe dressed slightly 'camp' - When he is seen trying out prostitution he does it for money and drugs. You can tell he clearly isn't into doing it by how anxious he is in the car because he isn't into guys and he doesn't really want to be using his body like that - but Josh gives him loads of weed so he does it. Afterwards when he runs out of the car you see him crying because he realizes how low he has got just for his next hit.
I don't know why people on here keep saying 'he was clearly gay' when he clearly was not. He showed interest in Jena's character from the get go, it was pretty clear he got a hard on when she put the sun lotion on his back too!

Mmmm...maybe he was crying because his time in the car had been interrupted?

reply

I thought it was very obvious that he was crying because of how low he had fallen and to think he was ready to do whatever just for the drugs to help him stay numb from life. The sex was only the means to the end.

No it was no BLATANTLY homophobic, if at all. blatantly would mean that the movies whole purpose was to encourage dislike of gay people. i think you are really overreacting.

reply

No, he wasn't "presented" as gay. He was doing the prostitution thing for the drugs and money, he clearly wasn't in to it or doing it because he enjoyed it. And even if he was bi, that isn't homosexuality. But what I really would like to know is why anything that doesn't praise homosexuality falls under the epithet of "homophobic"? Do you know what the word actually means?

This will be the high point of my day; it's all downhill from here.

reply

He wasn't presented as gay or bi. People just assumed he was cause he wore makeup.

reply

Well, I think wearing makeup is shorthand for "I'm gay or bi" because in all of my long long life, I have never once met a straight man (outside of an actor on stage, or at a Halloween party) who wore makeup just for the heck of it. In our culture, it's just not done.

reply

Um...no. No, it's not shorthand for "I'm gay or bi". A lot of boys wear makeup and are straight.

You must have a problem with normality.

reply

If he is bi (or presented as such) then why wouldn't he be aroused with a girl in the shower ? The movie is not homophobic. Sam's reaction is the typical society reaction.
