I guess I watched it the same night you did. I forgot just how much the film impressed me the first time I saw it. Great performances by the 3 leads, and a very emotional ending beautifully punctuated by Sarah McLachlan's song.
To answer your question, Yes- I made that connection pretty quick. But I wonder if he even knew she had a baby at all. I believe she was out of school for most of her pregnancy, intent on keeping the secret from everyone. No one at the school knew, so perhaps he didn't know either. I like to think if he knew about the pain she had experienced with her baby, things would have been different. Maybe he would have been stronger for her sake. Perhaps he would have never taken the gun to school. But we get very little insight into his past or his mental state. The fact that they answered so few questions about him and his relationship to her just made the film feel more authentic. When things like this happen in life, too many questions go unanswered. And we cannot seem to stop thinking about all the "if's" that might have changed the outcome.
If only this . . . If only that . . .
It works for the movie, but in real life, we need those questions answered.
I intended to get online and find out about the styrofoam coffins Alicia was talking about, but I haven't yet. I hate that burying a loved one always means such an extraordinary expense to an already traumatic and difficult experience. Affordable funeral services are a thing of the past. So I'd like to know if that was an accurate reference to a styrofoam coffin for people who cannot afford anything else.
