Continuity error?

OK, you know the bit where Alicia falls asleep in Deanna's room, and they show the TV playing The Star Spangled Banner before the TV channel signs off. What channel actually still does that? It's been YEARS since I've seen a TV channel that actually signs off. If nothing else, the ones I know about show informercials all night long. If I recall correctly, it's supposed to be the local NBC affiliate (there's mention of watching Jay Leno), so it should have been followed by the talk shows that follow Leno (ie Conan O'Brien, and I think in 2001-2002, it would have been followed by Carson Daly), then I think they go to news for the rest of the night.

The only stations I know of that do sign-offs regularly are some of the local small-market UHF stations. I know the local PBS affililate here in east central Florida (WBCC) does have signoffs where they play TSSB. So one way to explain that scene would be if Deanna, being the brainiac that she is, changed to a PBS station after watching Leno, but before falling asleep.

The entire movie was one long continuity error. If this film was supposed to be set in 1995, maybe that should have mentioned for a film released in 2001. (It being shelved for so long is probably the answer. But Roepert is wrong: this film was shelved for the right reason - it sucks.) What teen in 2001 references "The Crow" and listens to the Spin Doctors?

reply

the movie was never shelved. it was independently produced and financed for around 500,000. there was never a studio or production company involved to shelf it. it was picked up for a dvd release after its first festival screening. the asnwer to op's question is simple, it's a money issue, to show something on the tv they would have had to purchase the rights, and a film of such a modest budget couldn't afford anything gratuitous.

Her high school diploma at the very end of the movie has 2001 as the year of commencement, not to mention that many of the vehicles and technology shown in the movie were invented years after 1995. I never recall anything about the movie taking place in 1995, but I could have missed something.

The only error I noticed related to this movie was the fact that it never became more mainstream. It should be on the top 250 list on IMDb.
