alicia's dad

Did anyone else feel really sorry for Alicia's dad? He seemed so sweet and sad. And I also wonder why they bothered having him in a wheelchair, because it was never explained. Any thoughts about him?

reply

I felt sorry for him too. I thought it was sweet in the hospital scene when Alicia was cradling her baby and he was sitting beside her and looked so happy. As for the wheelchair, I'd only be speculating. Some sort of accident most likely. There was no mention of Alicia's mother .. perhaps she died in a car accident that also left the father left paralysed?

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF EARTH IS ANOTHER PLANET'S HELL?

I think you're really overthinking it. She said "Sometimes babies just die."
And it didn't talk about the dad or mom because they aren't the main characters.

reply

When I saw him in the chair and saw how she was along with her scar I thought maybe her mom and dad got in a car accident with her mom dying and dad getting paralyzed. I figured she cut herself from the depression of losing her mom.

reply

she said something about a long snow storm, so therefore i thought the baby died as a result of the aftermath of the storm.

reply

I thought she started cutting herself because her baby died.

same here

reply

Possibility that the two events probably coincided within a short term. I know many cutters, and they don't do anything that severe, so chances are that those two events happened in about a month's time. I'd imagine a car accident. The baby died from hypothermia, most likley, and if you listen to the dialogue nearer the end, when they talk about the storm, they said something along the lines of 'it went on for two weeks' and the school was closed cuz nobody could get there or something like that.. I imagine that the dad was happy and sad in about equal ammounts because they probably crashed, his wife most likley died, he ended up paralysed, but at least his pregnant little girl is still alive. That's just how I ended up peicing it together, and it seems so bad that it's hard to disbeleive..

THANK YOU! for mentioning that!

i am so sick of people calling alicia a cutter...she tried to KILL HERSELF, she tried to kill herself aftr her baby died, but she didnt suceed, and had to take a year away from school to learn to write with the other.

this "cutting" thing is so recent, nobody did it in 2002, except for people who acually cut themselves because they were depressed, not the dumb teenagers that do it for attention and to look "punk rock" now

For all of you people who think that the baby died as some result of the snow storm, you are wrong. I don't know why the baby died, but the reason the snow storm was mentioned was explained but you had to pay close attention. Due to the storm, they couldn't bury the baby until days after it died. Just clearing that up for everyone

honestly, this movie is about the two girls bonding over tragedy..if every detail that had question was answered then it would take from the movie..Not just that but the aspect of things just happening for no reason..a lot of people want answers for a lot of things so that they can get closure for the things that bring discomfort..but things just happen

reply

the baby died very suddenly, nobody knows why...thats the suspense...

and as for the wheel chair...the dad was ALREADY in the wheelchairwhen the baby was born...maybe he was just sick and old?

I suspect that Amanda (Alicia's baby) died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is the most common cause of death in babies under one year of age. It is often called " crib death" because most of the time, a parent or caregiver will put the baby in their crib to sleep, and when they return, the baby will have died with no signs of struggle.

"Doctors don't know what causes SIDS. It seems to happen more often in premature and low-birth-weight babies. It also is seen more often in babies whose mothers did not get medical care during the pregnancy and in babies whose mothers smoke. SIDS may also be more likely in babies who were part of a multiple pregnancy (for example, twins or triplets) or whose mothers are younger than 20. " (WebMD)

Amanda seems to fit into many of those "symptoms." Her family was low income (as evidenced by the need for a styrofoam coffin,) which means she probably didn't get the best medical care. Her mother, Alicia, was under twenty, and may have smoked at the time of Alicia's birth.

Also, if Alicia had any signs of illness, disability, or if she was premature, she would have been placed in an incubator, which appeared to not have been the case upon viewing the scene in the hospital room. Babies can not be taken out and completely disconnected from machines for the period of time it would have taken to take her back to Amanda's room, visit, and back.

Maybe the dad was in a wheel chair just to be in a wheel chair? Just something about the charater.. A trait for the charater to have because he's used so little.

As for the baby, she could have died from a million of things. SIDS don't work well as a thory because it 'normally' strikes between 1 month and 12 months. If the baby died the first day which is the way I understand it by the line, 'she was born and died on Dec 21..'

I PERSONALLY think that maybe the baby had a heart problem. Babies have a valve that closes soon after birth, sometimes it doesn't. If this isn't figured out the baby will suddenly turn blue and die. They used to call them 'blue babies.' It's rare, yet it's not. Most babies will get drugs that fix it. It's not so rare that a baby gets it, but it's extreamly rare that it can't be closed by meds. I had two brothers who died of this with in 24 hours of birth. (I had it as well but I got surgery on my heart to fix it. I was born in a much larger hospital in a bigger city after my brothers died and got a surgery to fix it. After the first two babies died of the same heart defect, next baby was watched very closely.) Anyway, that's what popped into my head when I seen the scene. When they would tell me about my brothers, they said they were fine the first few hours then got suddenly sick and died.

I think the Dad being in the wheelchair was a plot device to prevent the police from interrogating him further about Alicia's potential role in the shootings. He tells Alicia that he refused to answer their questions and that he dared them to drag a paralyzed man in for questioning. It was just one more way of guarding Alicia's secret until the end.

Back in my high school days, which we'll just date as "many years before 2002," cutting one's self was a communal ritual among a specific group. (we didn't share blades, just the experience). It had little or nothing to do with depression. I don't recommend it as an activity, but the point is that your statement is not factually accurate.

I thought he was sick. Honestly I thought he was the dead giy she showed her in the morgue.(sp) You know, "He looks just like you"

i think that line was actually poking fun at alicia because of her being a goth, and the goth stereotype is looking like you're dead.

"Maybe thats the path to peace..through music."

"i think that line was actually poking fun at alicia because of her being a goth, and the goth stereotype is looking like you're dead. "

I interpreted it differently - I thought it was more of a comment on Alicia being "dead" inside. Alicia stressed so much the lack of emotion in the room when she was telling Deanna that there was nothing to fear. There was no anger, no hate, etc. No feelings, period. And that "deadness" shows on Alicia's face.

Why the he* does it take so long to write with the other hand?

reply

I believe she took a year off school because she was pregnant, not because she had to learn how to write with the other hand. I arrive at this belief because no one at school knew that she had had a baby...until after the shooting, towards the end, when the small group of kids got together in that class room again.

The actor did a great job with a small role You could tell how much he loved his daughter and how helpless he felt that he couldn't help her--all with very few lines of dialogue.

As for his being in a wheelchair, physically challenged actors are always complaining (rightly) that they never get roles except ones that revolve around the disability, so great--here's one. I think the wheelchair was irrelevant to the plot.
