Clarify Barbara's fate for me please (SPOILER)

I first saw this underrated classic in 2004 and been a fan ever since. But one thing got me confused even after many rewatches, though: did Dagon eat Barbara or did he rape her to make her a host?

The host and human sacrifice thing always got me confused. I mean, their friend was used as a host and Barbara made Johnny promise her he would kill her if something like that happens to her, so I don't truly get what happened to her even after all these years.

Can someone please explain to me what really happened to her? Thanks.

She gets impregnated by the giant Creature while shackled up. It comes up from this lair and grabs her ripping her hands off the Shackles and she is presumably drowned or devoured.

Yep, arms ripped off, doesn't have gills, I'd say she's a goner.

This is the likeliest possibility, although I think even with her arms intact, she would have drowned anyway with Dagon having his tentacles all over her.

It was a little confusing in that Dagon apparently killed her after inseminating her -- why go to the effort of impregnating her if it is just going to kill her -- but I figured it decided that she was a lost cause anyway if Paul rescued her, so it went ahead and ate her rather than allow her to escape and somehow abort the spawn.

But that doesn't make sense. I mean, yes her body was full of cuts all over the place, but since none of the cuts were deep enough to ruin her internal organs, she was still viable for childbearing (probably, anyway).

Besides, at that point, Paul wasn't saving her at all. She was too far away for his reach and it would need another person to push her using a pole just for him to actually grab her. And Paul was alone in his quest, so even that is a no go.

I just assumed, finally, after all these years, Barbara was meant to be Dagon's dinner instead of bearing his children. Maybe he was hungry and why not consume a hot nude blonde, right?
