Sam Jackson's rank.

A little of topic in relation to the plot, but during the scene where he is addressing the group of soldiers in the beginning, he is referred to as SGT, yet wears the rank of a Specialist? (SPC)

Oh. I see your point. When I first read the subject I thought you were saying he smelled.

You're right I still don't get why Hollywood disregard the minimum basic reasearch when making a military movie. The issue about rank is So basic, that shouldn't be too hard to do a little research.
Sam Jackson is regarded as sergeant but wears a specialist rank which is not even a non commissioned officer at all. In the movie "Glory" Morgan Freeman character is promoted from Private First Class to... Sergeant Major???!!! Please.....!!! In the movie The Hurt a locker Jeremy Renners character wears a Sergeant First Class rank but in the credits he is listed as SSG Staff Sergeant, and the list goes on and on.

Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained? Is this not why you are here?

JacksonĀ“s character West is a Master Sergeant - means it is alright. The only error is that he, in certain scenes, wears a Specialist insignia; just an error by the prop department that fitted out the different uniforms with different insignia.

Oh, and the case with Morgan Freeman in Glory is alright, too. It was a new unit in a fast growing army and there were spectacular promotions - there were privates who directly became Colonel even. And as the USCT was not established and the pool was small it was reasonable.

Yeah, still shocked nobody noticed he had the wrong rank insignia on in that one scene.

Also, the berets were wrong too. Rangers wear tan berets, not black.

Last but not least, there's no way West was Hardy & Styles' "black hat". In the Army you gotta be at least an E-8 to be a drill instructor & it takes a minimum of 12 years to achieve that paygrade. Same goes for Colonel as an officer. Jackson is only six years older than Travolta & eight years older than Daly. For him to be the "black hat" to these two Colonels, he'd have to be 12-15 years their senior.

The switch from Black to Tan berets oversight I can understand as it was done for overall morale, silly reasoning but that was the logic I read, throughout the ranks and was implemented in mid 2001 so it is more than likely that with this being released in March 2003 then they likely would have been unaware of the switch in Hollywood while developing and filming late 2001 to early 2002.

They aren't exactly known for keeping current records with anything but I do understand everyone's point that it's not as if they couldn't get one intern to do a yahoo search, it was 2001, and get that information from any one of the hundreds of websites that existed or even to call a local VFW and have a chat as they generally keep current on all major military news and keep it on their community bulletin boards.

There is so much fail in this statement I don't know where to begin.
1) There are no drill instructors in the Army, they are drill sergeants. And you Don't have to be an E8 to be one. E5 and up can be a drill sergeant, hence the name drill Sgt.
2) MSG West is not drill Sgt he is an instructor in fictitious Ranger/Jungle warfare type school in Panama.
3) The term black hat comes from Army Airborne school where the instructors wear a black baseball style cap. Ranger school instructors are call RIs- ranger instructors.
The writers of this screenplay did know jack about the Army.

Regarding the rank structure of units and personnel in top units, while on assignments there is suppose to be no saluting ( this is how officers get killed) and usually no rank structure in case of capture
