Why did Kendall write the "8" ???(SPOILERS)

As Kendall was dying in the hospital, why did he write the "8" on Osborne's hand?? I have figured out most of the movie, after repeated viewings. But this still doesn't make sense to me as he was one of the "hit men" who was assigned to take out Sgt. West.

So many twists and turns that have taken so many viewings to finally put "2 + 2" together!! I had so much fun with it yesterday as I had a friend of mine watching with me and I kept quizzing him and stringing him along with the viewing. And it was fun to see his amazement at the finale!!

"Primal Fear" is in someways along this same line and today I am going to introduce him to "The Usual Suspects" and "Memento"!! Any other suggestions to big twist movies???
