1999 Survivor Series Review

I was glad that they brought back the elimination matches for this years ppv. I was never a fan of the Survivor Series shows that were booked like every other ppv of the year. JR and Lawler on commentary as usual.

Match #1

8 Man Elimination Tag Team Match

The Godfather, D-Lo Brown And The Headbangers Vs The Acolytes And The Dudley Boyz

D-Lo comes out dressed as a pimp in training but The Headbangers come out looking more like Carlito fanboys than pimps. On paper I would think the Acolytes and Dudleyz would get the win, but they had that match back at Unforgiven so things might not work out so well. Bangers got strap on fros and the heels knock em right off. Pretty quick elimination as Bradshaw kills Thrasher with the clothesline from hell to eliminate him at 2:41. Mosh takes over and gets his token offense but the Dudleyz hit 3D and send him packing at 4:28. Headbangers are like the Bushwhackers by this point. You know they are dead weight and will go quick from whatever team they are on. The heels are looking pretty good until D-Lo slaps Bradshaw who is on the apron, so the angry redneck fetches a chair and smacks D-Lo getting himself dq'd at 5:18. D-Von and Faarooq argue over who should get the pin attempt on the KO'd D-Lo and they fight outside and get double counted at 6:15, that was stupid. That leaves Bubba to play heel in peril and he and D-Lo fight up top where Brown tries a huricinrana but gets powerbombed off the top rope. D-Lo manages a tag and Godfather does his one move the fans pop for. Ho Train and a hotag to D-Lo with the lowdown finishes it at 9:06. Sole survivers: The Godfather and D-Lo Brown. Tim White parties with the ho's afterwards. Call it 2 stars.

Match #2

Singles Match

Shawn Stasiak Vs Kurt Angle

I like Finks grand introduction for Kurt Angle. Angle makes his WWF debute on this night and it's a good thing he chose the WWF because I know WCW would never of done anything with him. Mat stuff to start and the fans have pegged Kurt a heel already. He rolls out to tell them they shouldn't boo him. Angle busts out the suplexes and Stasiak gets his token stuff here and there. He goes up top and gets crotched. Angle brings him down and the olympic slam finishes it at 5:53. 2 stars.

Match #3

8 Man Elimination Tag Team Match

European Champion The British Bulldog And The Mean Street Posse Vs Val Venis, Mark Henry, Steve Blackman And Gangrel

And oddball setup here. I guess Bulldog and Posse are the heels for this thing. Posse are totally useless as Pete Gas gets taken out by Blackman and a bicycle kick at 2:44. Gangrel kills Rodney with an impaler at 4:11 and the only guy of the three Joey Abs gets a stun gun on Mark Henry, but that's it for him as Henry fights back and the big splash finishes Abs at 5:48. Bulldog is now 4 on 1. Bulldog and Gangrel fight up top and he hits a superplex and pins him at 6:32. That will ease things up alittle. Next he and Blackman do a little thing and Bulldog gets a fisherman suplex for the pin at 7:17. Henry in and he gives Bulldog an ugly press slam that drops the poor guy on his shoulder but he comes back until he gets double teamed, which is weird watching a tweener and a heel double team the heel champion. Big splash from Henry and a money shot from Venis gets the pin at 8:56. Okay I guess. 2 stars.

Match #4

Sudden Death 8 Woman Tag Team Match

Womens Champion Ivory, Terri Runnels, Jaquelyne And Luna Vs The Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Tori And Debra

This pile of crap ranks up there with the 4 doinks from 93 and the midgets from 94. Goes all of 1:50 or so as 75% of the cast sucks, they do things badly and Mae and Moolah get possibly the worst double clothesline on the champ for the pin. On the box it says the title was on the line but here Moolah walks out with the belt and JR says no it's not on the line. Whatever. DUD!!!

Match #5

Singles Match

Kane w Torri Vs X-Pac

So DX is back together with HHH and Pac turned on Kane. Pac jumps him in the pyro then Kane battles back, chokeslam and a pin attempt is broken up by Roadogg who gets decked. Pac with the x factor gets two and DX show up drawing a dq at 4:14. Torri accidently gets kicked in the face by Pac and the EMTs do the run in. 1 star.

Match #6

5 Man Elimination Tag Team Match

The Big Show Vs The Big Boss Man, Viscera, Mideon And Albert

This was during the atrocious Bossman steals Shows dads corpse angle, and we get highlights from the funeral. Show had Blue Meanie and Kai En Tai as his partners but kicked their asses during Heat because he wants Bossman to himself and his team. Mideon looks like something that crawled out of the dungeon of doom here. I had a pretty good idea of how this would go. Chokeslam, Mideon gone at 20 seconds. Chokeslam, Albert gone at 31 seconds. Big bodyslam which the crowd pops for on Viscera and the fattest chokeslam ever gets the pin at 55 seconds. Bossman hesitates getting in and gets himself counted out at 1:25. Wow..........if not for the womens tag match I would peg this with the worst Survivor Series tag match they EVER put on. DUD!!!

Backstage HHH gets in Austins face and leads him on a chase and Austin gets rundown by the white hummer and gets taken away by ambulance to miss an entire year of action, so much for that wonder surgery from the owen driver. They destroy about 8 or 10 minutes of ppv time on this "life threatening and dastardly attack" I thought Russo was working for WCW???

Match #7

Intercontinental Championship Match

Chyna w Miss Kitty Vs Chris Jericho

Jericho shoves Kitty and the girls put the boots to him and they fight outside. Jericho sidesteps a Chyna dive and she hits the barrier. Jericho lays on the badmouth and rams her into the exposed barrier. Back in the ring for a missile dropkick that gets two. Chyna comes back, but gets bulldogged and Lionsaulted. Crowd is solidly behind Jericho. Jericho plants one on Miss Kitty, and gets speared by Chyna. They fight on the floor. Back in the ring and Jericho gets a powerbomb for two, and another face pop. JR notes the crowd reaction now and Lawler says it's 50/50 and calls JR sexist for saying theyre all behind Jericho, the perv is just upset that Jericho shoved his wife. Chyna comes back with the handspring elbow and DDT for two. Ref gets run over and Jericho nails her with the IC title for two and 1/2. Chyna tries a rana and gets caught in the Walls of Jericho she tries for the ropes and Jericho pulling her back, and the crowd loves it. Chyna makes the ropes, and the crowd booes. Jericho tries a superplex, but Chyna reverses to a top rope Pedigree kinda sloppily, and that’s enough for the pin at 13:45. 2 1/2 stars.

Match #8

8 Man Elimination Tag Team Match

The Hardy Boyz w Terri Runnels, And Edge And Christian Vs The Hollies And Too Cool

Fans seem dead in the opening minutes. Then everybody goes lucha and they do that WCW spot on the floor where everyone dives onto everybody else who is standing outside. Christian gets beat up by the heels and Sexay is annoying as hell with that laugh of his. Lawler is being a doushebag to JR about the Austin inccident and they don't shut up about it for the entire match. Edge hottags and spears for the heels. He gets nailed by Jeff accidently and Hardcore rolls him up for the pin at 5:50. Scotty jumps off the top and catches Matt with a bulldog on the way down for the pin at 6:05. Jeff gets beat up next and the Hollies start arguing over who gets to pin him and in the commotion Jeff gets Scotty with a 450 splash and pin at 9:56. Jeff and Christian try doing the poetry in motion but Holly just nails him with a missle dropkic, nice timing. Sexay screws aroung dancing, puts on the goggles and hits the hiphop drop for the pin at 11:18. Christian against Sexay and the Hollies. He kills Sexay with the downward spiral for the pin at 11:29. Then he and Crash square off with Christian coming out on top with the unprettier for the pin at 13:42. Christian and Hardcore have a nice mini match to wrap things up. Christian tries a victory roll but Hardcore just sits down and pins him on the attempt at 14:10. Best elimination match of the night. 2 1/2 stars. JR and Lawler constantly bitching about Stone Cold drags it down from 3 stars.

Match #9

Tag Team Championship Match

The New Age Outlaws Vs Mankind And Al Snow

Roadogg sorta playing a heel in peril as they beat him up in the corner and on the outside. JR and Lawler spend the majority talking about the dykes who bitched at Wal-Mart for selling a severed dolls head with a wrestling figure. Things break down as usual and Gunn gets a fameasser on Mankind for two. Mankind comes back with a doublearm ddt and mandible claw on both Outlaws. They escape and after getting rid of Al Snow, hit a spike piledriver on Mick for the pin at 12:45. Call it 2 1/2 stars.

Match #10

World Heavyweight Championship Triple Threat Match

HHH Vs The Rock Vs ?????

So Austin is gone and Shane makes a subsitute........The Big Show. Crowd likes it. Show beats both their asses until Rock hits a legsweep, he goes for an early peoples elbow but HHH breaks it up. They brawl to the entrance, and HHH gets punched onto a monitor table and goes through it, cheap ikea crap. Rock conks Show with a fire extinguisher and he fights with HHH to ringside. Best spot of the match as HHH and Rock suplex Big Show through the spanish table. They brawl into the stands. Back in the ring Rock runs over the ref. Rock Bottom, no ref. Shane slides in and counts two. Another Rock Bottom, but Show pulls Shane out at two. Show and Rock fight on the floor, as HHH grabs his belt. Shane takes it away and gets pedigreed for his effort. DX runs in, and Vince storms in after them. Vince takes a swing at HHH with the belt and misses, but HHH double takes when he turns into the Big Show, he turns around again and Vince pops him one with the belt. Chokeslam gives Show the title at 14:16. He does the boyhood dream come true bit and the fans like it alright I guess. Im going 3 stars. Added a 1/2 star for the suplex table spot.

Overall Opinion: Pretty much a mediocre ppv. But it's nice to see the elimination matches again. It has more to offer than the 98 edition on repeat watching I think, just because last year was ALL about the storyline and not about the ringwork.

Final Score: It gets a 4.8 from me.

reply

SO the reason for Austin's hiatus was his Neck problem coming back?

They had to many matches, with DX just reunited they should have just had all of them vs, Rock, Kane, Mankind and Al Snow.

"It's not about money.... It's about sending a Message..... Everything Burns!!!"

reply

Yeah, pretty much. He had been working with the neck injury since Summerslam 97, which is nuts.

I woulda loved Rock/Kane/Mankind/Show Vs DX. With all the ppvs they had and the frequent title changes, it wouldn't hurt anyone to put storyline first ahead of a title change.

reply

Yeah HHH's push is what ruined the Attitude era, they couldn't top Austin vs McMahon just like WCW couldn't top the nWo.
