1994 Survivor Series Review

The 1994 WWF Survivor Series took place in San Antonio Texas, and you hosts are the odd pairing of Vince McMahon And Gorilla Monsoon.

Match #1

10 Man Elimination Match

The Bad Guys: Intercontinental Champion Razor Ramon, The British Bulldog Daveyboy Smith, The 1-2-3 Kid And The Headshrinkers w Afa, And Captain Lou Albano Vs The Teamsters: Tag Team Champions Shawn Michaels, Diesel, Jeff Jarrett, Owen Hart And Jim The Anvil Neidhart

By this time, we had Headshrinkers 2.0 with the stupid storyline of Fatu not being used to wearing wrestling boots, and during the entrance he is barefoot then during instruction he argues with the managers to coax him into wearing the boots, this would come up later. Sionne replaced Samu a few weeks back and he's better known to wrestling fans as The Barbarian. Bit of a smart fan joke on the JJ character as during this match, Jarrett loses quite a bit of tinsle off his garish outfit now and again. Kid knocks Jarrett arond then Sionne comes in and Jarrett gets a cross body for 2. Owen tags in and wants Bulldog to tag in. Arm wrench and Bulldog flips out of that and goes to an armbar. Owen backflips out of that but gets slingshotten into the faces corner and a press slam by Bulldog. Bulldog sunset flip gets 2. Owen recovers and tags Anvil and they drop Bulldog with a clothesline. They miss a second attempt and Bulldog drops them both. Delayed suplex on Neidhart and he tags Fatu in. Fatu goes up top and drops a headbutt then stops to screw around with his boots. Dumb character developement. Jarrett tags in and gets clobbered and goes consult with the rest of the Teamsters. Razor in and Jarrett shows him up and poses. Razor gets pissed and clotheslines Jarrett outside. Jarrett sucker punches Razor then goes for a crossbody and runs into the blockbuster. Kid tags in and he and Razor double team Jarrett for 2. Kid misses something and gets caught in an abdominal stretch. Jarrett gets help from Shawn then Kid gets backdropped out but fights back and tags Fatu and Jarrett tags Owen. Owen makes the mistake of sending Fatu headfirst to the corner and he starts showing signs of Rikishi then drops Owen for a 2 count. Blind tag to Diesel and he turns Fatu inside out and a jackknife puts Fatu away at 12:33. 1-2-3 Kid jumps in and uses speed and kicks on Diesel but gets overpowered and squashed with another jacknife at 13:14. Seonne is in and is able to match power but gets kicked in the gut and another jacknife gets rid of him at 13:47, man he was kinda useless tonight. Bulldog heads in and pounds away on Diesel but runs into a big boot and spills outside where Owen and Jarrett tie him up for a countout at 14:49. Good selling job by the Kid who was shown to be still unconcious on the floor. Razor has a showdown with Diesel and starts to win it but Diesel backdrops out of the Razors Edge then a jacknife but Shawn wants in finally so he gets the tag then wants Diesel to hold up Razor for a superkick. 3rd time is not the charm and Razor dodges and Diesel eats boot, then goes nuts on Shawn!! Crowd loves it instantly. Diesel chases Shawn to the back all the time dropping his teammates and they wind up getting counted out as a batch at 20:41. Sole survivor Razor Ramon. I noticed Shawn wasn't wearing his kneepads tonight. I guess he figured since he wasn't doing anything of value he didn't have to bother with full gear. Remember: If a wrestler isn't gonna bother putting on all his attire, chances are he isn't going to do much. Todd Pettingil follows Shawn through the back of the building and Shawn says theyre through, dumps the tag belt and tears out of Survivor Series. Same thing would happen 3 years later. Im going with a flat 3 star out of 5. Good opener but the finish sucked bigtime but was neccessary to the story. Realistically the ref should of counted each heel out one at a time. But whatever.

Match #2

8 Man Elimination Match

The King Court: Jerry The King Lawler, Cheezy, Sleezy, and Queezy Vs Clowns R Us: Doink The Clown, Dink, Pink, And Wink

Ugh. I thought the clown match at SS 93 was an embarrassement to wrestling fans but this match was twice as bad. I won't even devote the time to a lengthy review. Short recap. Lawler cheats to pin Doink, then helps the evil midgets eliminate the good midgets one by one. Theyre was some bad comedy spots sprinkled in and it is just a waste of everyones time. This is the timeline when the "kill the clown" chants started up. Dink is finally eliminated 15 minutes in and then Lawler wants to celebrate by himself and calls his stooges worthless. They turn on him and all the midgets chase him to the entranceway where Doink hits him in the face with a pie. Total crap. DUD!!! Spare yourself the 15 minutes and FF.

Todd Pettingzoo interviews Bull Nakano who beat Alundra Blayze in Japan in a 4 star womens match for the title but nobody in the US (especially the WWF where they push clown and king midgets) cares about that sort of boring wrestling.

Match #3

World Heavyweight Championship Submission Rules Match

Bret The Hitman Hart w Daveyboy Smith Vs Bob Backlund w Owen Hart

Backlund returned to the WWF after almost a full 10 years as a bland babyface then when he couldn't beat Bret Hart in a title match, he snapped and now we have the deranged Mr Bob Backlund. Helen and Stu are sitting in the front row, this became crucial later. Submission rules and only one submission wins it. Backlund tries to sneak attack but Bret slams him and sends him outside where Bulldog rolls him back in. Hitman goes to a headlock and Backlund suplexes out of it. Bob catches Bret by suprise with a crossface chickenwing attempt but Bret maneuvers out and back to a headlock. Backlund maneuvers out of that and back to the chickenwing attempt and Bret uses a belly to belly to drop him. Bret misses an elbow and Bob works with an armbar. Shots of Bret's wife and kids, and it's sad to watch this show now with all the family members still together and kicking before the deaths and total implosion of the family. Bret gets a swinging neckbreaker but Backlund continues working the arm and shoulder. Bret counters again and goes to the figure four but Owen doesn't even have the towel in his hand. Backlund manages to turn it over then Owen screams for Bulldog to throw in the towel but Daveyboy says "No Way!" Bret turns it over and Backlund grabs the ropes to break. Bret attacks the knee then Backlund manages a pileriver and tries the chickenwing, but Bret makes the ropes. Backlund with a swinging neackbreaker then he gets sent shoulder first into the post. Backlund tries a sleeper and Bret fights out of that and they double KO eachother. Bret recovers first with a piledriver, then a bulldog, followed by a russian legsweep. Sharpshooter in the center of the ring, but now Owen tries to interfere and Bulldog chases him around the ring and into it where Owen breaks the sharpshooter. Bulldog tries to spear Owen and goes headfirst into the steps meanwhile Backlund slaps on the crossface chicken wing. Bulldog is in no shape to throw in the towel. Bret tries fighting it a couple of times but Backlund has it synched up good. Owen shows genuine concern and starts crying on camera then goes to gain sympathy from his parents at ringside as Bulldog is completely out of it on the floor. Stu doesn't buy it but Helen is starting to believe him and they argue amongst themselves. Helen finally has seen enough and throws the towel in and Owen bolts to the back in overjoyed celebration, the little ****!! We have a new WWF champion at 35:23. Crowd boo's the **** out of it. Nice mat wrestling and good screwjob storyline finish. 3 1/2 stars.

Todd interviews Owen and he confirms that the whole thing was a setup.

Match #4

10 Man Elimination Tag Match

Guts And Glory: Lex Luger, Adam Bomb, Mabel, And Smokin Gunns w Oscar Vs The Million $ Team: Tatanka, Bam Bam Bigelow, King Kong Bundy, And The Heavenly Bodies w Ted Dibiase. Luger suprises Tatanka and Tatanka backs off then sucker kicks Luger. Mabel tags in and Prichard tags in and Mabel just sits on him for an easy elimination at 3:40. Mabel and Bundy have a showdown and Bundy calls Mabel fatboy. They do the fat Vs fat collision and Bundy ends up going down. Bigelow tags in and Mabel goes up top but gets slammed off. Bigelow tries a sunset flip but Mabel sits on him but rolls off instead of trying for a pin. Cactus clothesline by Mabel and they both spill outside. Bigelow makes it back in but Mabel gets counted out at 6:55. Bomb slingshot clotheslines Bigelow. He runs the ropes and takes a wussy smack to the back of the head by Bundy then gets dropped by Bigelow who finishes him with a moonsault at 8:48. Delray and Luger have a matchup and Jimmy gets a superkick then Luger rallies and Ko's him with the steel forearm at 10:36. Bodies were useless in there. Gunns get a double russian legsweep on Tatanka then Bart has a match with Buffalo!! Bart tries a crucifix pin but Tatanka turns it into End Of The Trail and ends Bart's night at 14:09 then Billy charges in and beats on Tatanka. He gets caught and powerslammed on a leapfrog attempt then Bundy tags in and misses an elbow but an avalanche soon follows and another elbow squashes Billy at 16:53. It's Luger against Tatanka/Bundy/Bigelow. Big beatdown on Luger follows. Luger rallies with a suprise small package on Tatanka at 22:52 , but Bundy is a genious and he simply runs in and splashes Luger while he is down on the mat to end it all at 23:00. Million $ Team beat the crap out of Luger until the faces make the save. Im going 2 1/2 stars.

Mr. Backlund calls an impromptu press conference to announce his new changes for the WWF. Unfortunately, things didn't pan out as he got squashed by Diesel the week after.

Match #5

Casket Match

The Undertaker w Paul Bearer Vs Yokozuna w Mr Fuji And James E Cornette

Special Troubleshooting Referee: Chuck Norris

The blowoff to the year long wait from the 94 Rumble screwjob finish that saw 10 guys beat Taker into reincarnation and an eventual return at the 94 SumerSlam where he beat The Underfaker. Yoko is completely psyched out. Taker knockes him out of the ring onto the casket and Yoko freaks. Taker pounds on him outside then back into the ring. Both guys end up in the casket and Yoko takes over with the nerve hold. Taker fights up so Yoko sends him to the corner and Taker runs out with a clothesline. Taker goes up top and hits a flying clothesline then starts to roll him into the casket as the Million $ corporation shows up to run interference. While Bundy and Bigelow occupy Norris, IRS runs in and puts the sleeper on Taker to knock him out. Yoko rolls him into the box but as he goes to close the lid, Taker zombies up and puts the goozle on Yoko, who is shocked to say the least. Jarrett tries Chuck Norris and gets a thrust kick for his trouble and runs away. Taker rallies with a ddt and big boot that knocks Yoko right into the casket and the lid is slammed shut at 15:22. It wasn't that bad actually. 2 stars.

Overall Opinion: It's worth atleast 1 viewing for story advance purposes, but nothing really of longterm value as far as match quality goes. The Midget match was a waste of time that added nothing to the final score.

Final Score: I give it 3.7 stars out of a perfect 10.0.

Very in-depth review. I enjoyed it a bit more than you did from a nostalgic point of view, but I agree it wasn't one of the best.

It was great seeing all those guys I used to watch growing up though. I had forgotten quite a few of them.

R.I.P. Rick Ducommun and Tony Longo
