1992 Survivor Series Review

Today im reviewing the 1992 edition of the Survivor Series. Different format this year, there aren't any elimination matches. Which sucked.

Match #1

Tag Team Match

High Energy Vs The Headshrinkers w Afa

High Energy have some minor success until Afa cracks his kendo stick on Koko's back. Shrinkers take turns handing him his ass. Samu misses something allowing Koko to tag Owen who tries fighting both Shrinkers but Samu drops him and Fatu just KILLS him on a top rope splash and pins him at 7:26. I watched this video when it first came out and this match was lackluster then and it's is basically a squash for the Shrinkers. 1 1/2 star.

Sean Mooney interviews Nailz who must s*** himself accidently quite often.

Match #2

Nightstick Match

The Big Bossman Vs Nailz

The final match in this feud. An item on a pole match. Nailz goes for the stick early but Bossman stops him both times. Bossman gets the stick first which is unusual for a face to get the weapon first over the heel, he whacks Naiilz then Nailz gets the stick and whacks him a few shots. Bossman catches him with the bossman slam and pin at 5:43. Feh 1 star.

Mooney interviews Nailz backstage who almost chokes Mooney but decides better not with the cameras on him, he would go find McMahon and try strangeling him then inadvertantly help Vince get off the hook on the steroid trial years later.

Alfred Hayes interviews Tatanka

Mean Gene interviews Flair and Razor Ramon on their upcoming tag match against Savage and Flair.

Match #3

Singles Match

The Model Rick Martel Vs Tatanka

Martel stole Tatanka's feathers. That's the feud. During the match Doink makes his WWF ppv debute. He hangs out in the entrance way mocking the fans. Martel sends Tatanka to the corner and misses a charge runnnig his shoulder into the post. Tatanka works the bad shoulder and arm. Tatanka almost gets Martel with a backslide and back into an armlock. Martel throws Tatanka outside then rams his back into to the apron. Back inside Martel working the back with knees and elbow drops. Martel goes to the second rope and gets punched on the way down. Tatanka rallies and chops Martel all over the place. He hits the tomohawk chop off the top rope then hits the end of the trail and pins Martel at 10:59. 2 1/2 stars.

Match #4

Tag Team Match

The Machoman Randy Savage and Mr Perfect Vs The Natureboy Ric Flair and Razor Ramon

Warrior got bent out of shape again with the wwf about his push so he took off after SNME in October. The WWF was left hanging and had to pull Perfect out of retirement. Perfect was asked to be Savage's partner and he accepted, Heenan was irrate and slapped him then Hennig embarassed Heenan on Primetime wrestling. Perfect starts off with Razor and shows no sign of ringrust. Flair tags in and he gets knocked stupid by Perfect. So far all Perfect. Savage tags and they double team Flair. Savage gets overpowered by Razor and the heels take turns kicking his ass. Razor puts on a sloppy half crab, Savage should get out of this. Then for some reason, Perfect starts walking towards the back then decides to come back. Razor slaps Hennig suckerng him into the ring so he distracts the ref and the heels can hand Savage his ass. Flar makes a dumass call and goes up top only to get slammed off by Savage. Savage hottags Hennig and Perfect handles both Flair and Razor. Outside the ring Flair bops Savage with a chair and inside the ring Perfect runs into Hebner knocking him out of the match, Joey Marrella runs to ringside and as Perfect plexes Flair Razor breaks it up. Everything falls apart with Perfect and Savage winning by dq via excessive doubleteaming of Flair and Razor on Perfect at 15:50. Flair puts the figure four on Perfect but Savage gives him a chair and Perfect jabs Flair right in the mouth. Heenan is having a breakdown in the booth. Im going 3 stars.

Mean Gene interviews Razor and Flair who are not pleased at all with the outcome.

Match #5

Singles Match

Virgil Vs Yokozuna

Almost a complete squash for Yokozuna. Virgil gets his token droppkicks and punches but Yoko uses his signature repetoire and finally puts Virgil away with the bonzai dropp at 3:34. 1/2 star

Perfect and Savage are celebrating and they get under Heenans skin

Match #6

8 Man Tag Team Elimination Match

World Tag Champs Money Incorporated and The Beverly Brothers Vs The Natural Disasters and The Nasty Boys.

The only elimination match on the card and it's under the old tag team rules meaning when one guy is eliminated his partner is gone too. Beverlies are the only one's in the match not to have the tag belts. Blake and Typhoon start off with Blake getting the short end. Earthquake tags in and slaps on a bearhug then muscles Blake into a corner. Typhoon traps both beverlies in the corner and the Disasters hit them with the double avalanche. Knobbs beats on Bo for a few minutes then Saggs comes in and hits a pump handle slam on Bo. Saggs gets distracted and Bo takes control with a double arm hook suplex. Dibiasie in and he and IRS double team Saggs. IRS with a legdrop and a 2 count. IRS tries a hiptoss but Saggs counters with his own. Blake in and he powerslams Saggs. Blake almost gets Saggs. Falling neckbreaker by Blake on Saggs. Rest hold. Saggs gets out of it and puts on a sleeper, but Blake sends him to the ropes and they collide, both down. Quake in and he hammers Blake then beats up all four heels by hmself. Blake tries a crucifix on Typhoon but gets a samoan drop instead then Quake finishes him at 9:25, Beverlies are gone. Dibiasie in next and he gets clobbered. IRS comes in to help and they belly to back suplex Quake. Quake plays face in peril for a few minutes. Dibiasie gets caught then the race for the tag is on. Typhoon hottags and cleans house. He hits the big splash but Dibiasie breaks it up. Ted gets knocked outside, then trips up Typhoon (probably didn't need any help) and IRS pins Typhoon at 15:45, immediatley Sags runs in and pins IRS 5 seconds later. Sole survivors The Nasty Boys. 2 1/2 stars.

Alfred Hayes interviews a bruised Virgil who warns Bret Hart to watch out for Yokozuna.

Match #7

Casket Match

The Undertaker w Paul Bearer Vs Kamala w Kimchee and Dr Harvey Whippleman

Taker and Bearer bring a double wide double deep casket to ringside and Kamala looks like he's s*** himself 3 times over. Taker chases Kamala (as fast as The Undertaker moves anyway) Kamala catches him getting back into the ring but Taker turns it around and goes oldschool, what a s****y name for a move. Kamala gets in some chops knocking Taker outside where he goozles Kimchee and Whippleman (another stupid name thanks Taz/Tazz). Kamala sends Taker face first to the steps, then whacks him with a chair. Kamala slams Taker in the ring but Taker is right back up. Kamala hits some splashes but Taker keep getting up. Kimchee gets ahold of the urn and passes it to Kamala who doesn't want anything to do with it. Taker picks it up and parts his scalp with it and knocks Kamala into the casket at 5:27. Bearer gives Taker a hammer and nails so he can seal the casket. Slightly better than their Summerslam match. 1 1/2 star.

Match #8

WWF Championship Match

World Champion Bret Hart Vs Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels

Shawn beat Bulldog for the title back in October at SNME and now he's going for the big one. Only the world title is on the line. Kinda eerie watching these two 5 years prior to the same event and match that people would not and will not ever get over. Fantastic wrestling from both guys. Bret outsmarts Shawn in the wrestling departement so Shawn goes to punching. Bret controls nearly all of the first 5 or 8 minutes until he blind charges and runs shoulder first into the post. Shawn attacks the shoulder and sends Bret into the corner and Hart does his trademark bump, Shawn gets a close 2 count. Shawn with a headlock/resthold. Bret gets out of it then gets knocked down with a dropkick. Shawn with a rib breaker and back to the headlock. Shawn pouring it on. Shawn hits a flying elbow for another close 2 and back to a front face lock. Shawn sends Bret into the corner and Bret springboards over Michaels head and hits a belly to back suplex! Shawn gets caught and slingshot into the corner. Both guys down. Bret pops up and Shawn backs off. Bret fires Shawn into the corner then kicks him and Shawn crotches on the top rope. Bret gets a 2 1/2 count. Bret with the russian legsweep and another 2 count. Pendulum backbreaker and an elbow off the second rope!!! 1...2...Shawn kicks out. Bret's going into the 5 moves of doom but Shawn won't stay down. Bret superplexes Shawn then gets another 2 1/2 after a long pause. Bret runs into the ref giving Shawn time to recover, both guys outmaneuver eachother until Shawn sends Bret outside. Shawn slams Bret on the floor. Shawn gets frustrated and argues with the ref then Bret rolls him up for another close 2. Shawn crescent kicks Bret then goes for his suplex finisher but Bret fights him off and it's a punchfest. Shawn gets tied up in the ropes and Bret charges as Shawn gets free and Hart ends up crotching himself in the ropes. Shawn goes to the second rope and gets caught jumping off and Bret slaps on the sharpshooter for the win at 26:40. Great match. Im going 4 1/2 stars.
Santa Claus comes out to celebrate with Bret to close the show.

Overall Opinion: I watched this when it first came out on video back in late 92 and thought it stunk. I hated the match layout and the fact they did away with elimination matches this year. Also I was 12 at the time and found the world title match boring. But now? The main event saved it and is up there in the greats. The rest of the card still kinda sucks. Only good thing out of it is Bret/Shawn.

Final Score: On a scale of 0.1 to 10.0? Im going with a 5.8. If it wasn't for the main event I would of put this thing in the 3 to 4 reigon.

Excellent review, I just finished watching this on DVD. I was 13 when I first saw this on video and I too thought it sucked. Back then I was never a fan of Michaels or Hart but over the years I've come to appreciate their talents. They really did save the show here although the Flair/Ramon versus Savage/Perfect was great entertainment.

Last night I watched the 1991 SS and noticed that when a tag team member was pinned his partner was still in the match. In the 1992 SS the rule was that both team members were eliminated. Did they change this rule from year to year or just after 1991?

Desperanto spoken here...

reply

it was a one time deal, the only other time they did this was during the monster 20 man tag team matches from the first two ppvs. Time constraints obviously but those matches still went 40+ minutes.

reply

It is very Erie indeed, sometimes people seem to forget Bret and Shawn met at all prior to WM12.
