How did you discover Nick Drake?

For me it was in the late 70's and a record arrived at the odd used record store. It was called the Greater Antilles Sampler and it had a price of "99c" stamped on the album in the corner. There was an Eno song, one by June Tabor, some weird stuff and "Northern Sky" by Nick Drake.

It was the late 90s and I was in Blockbuster Music or maybe they had already been bought out by Wherehouse Music at the time. I heard this wonderful music playing over the loudspeakers in the store, and I went up to the counter and asked what it was. The clerk showed me the CD case. It was "Way to Blue: An Introduction to Nick Drake." I bought it that day and have enjoyed it ever since.

I just watched the documentary. Tears welled up as the credits rolled and "Northern Sky" was playing. I don't remember which song(s) played the first time I heard Nick's music, but that must have been one of them, because I rushed to purchase a copy. I thoroughly enjoyed the documentary, and would recommend it to anyone. I too wish it were longer, as a reviewer has stated.

Another thing I wish for is to hear much more from Nick's mother, Molly. The song that was played in the documentary, and the poem that was qouted, were very beautiful, and I'd personally love to hear more. I must agree with Nick's sister that he was undoubtedly influenced by his mother's creative works.

Long live the music of Nick Drake.

1977 -- I was working at a radio station and found the "white album" -- a promotional compilation of Bryter Layter and Five Leaves Left. Needless to say, I fell in love at first listen and was very sad to know that there would be no more music from him. Every time I played something from the album I got calls from people wanting to know who he was. "Cello Song" got the most requests, but I always got all goosepimply every time I heard "Northern Sky." Still do.

Make me wanna holler, throw up both my hands.

The Japanese metal band Boris did a tribute to Nick Drake in the form of the cover for their album Akuma no Uta (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akuma_no_Uta). It is very similar to that of Drake's Bryter Layter album. Figured if Boris thought he was worth checking out, he must be. Turned out he was.
