the dancing

i must say the dancing was horrible. Every little girl was stick thin, and had zero expression on their face. You would think they would look for people that were good at dancing.

that part of the movie was wonderful

I didn't mind the dancing. Plus, the point of the movie wasn't about how good they were about dancing. It was about two different people learning to accept themselves, and really just be their own age.

reply

Exactly! Plus, they were about 8 or 9 years old, they would hardly be the standard of people that had been dancing for 8 or 9 years would they?

When I saw this movie a long time ago, my mother said the same thing. She said something along, "Why is she doing that? That's not even dancing." I thought the whole point when "Ray" was dancing at the end was because she was "breaking free" or something along thoses lines. Not 100% sure, but didn't "Molly" say something like free styling like doing whatever you wanted meaning not doing ol' traditional dacning like "Ray" was doing before? Unless your talking about another part of the movie... I probably don't remember.

after all the ballet dancers do their boring dance, doesn't ray go crazy and just jump around and stuff? or does she do that while they dance.. whatever, i know she's not doing a normal dance though

reply

Can support the "Breaking Free" intension of Ray's dance.
Or it could be a freaky kind of lyrical jazz or contemporary.
But who watched the little girl when Jesse Spencer sings ;)

reply

Earlier in the movie when Molly was picking up Ray from ballet, the class finished early and the teacher told them they could free style dance. Ray leaves and tells Molly it's basically for babies and hippies. Molly tells her it's fun but Ray simply replies fun is just the base of fundamentals. By finally dancing freely, Ray was being a kid and trusting Molly's words.

Well think about it,if you go to a kids dance class it isn't full of stunning proffessional looking dancers, they are at a class to learn to dance and I can say that whenever I go to see a dance show with kids in it most of them have the most serious faces ever lol cos they have to concentrate so much on what they are doing. I think it makes it look more like a real dance class.

They were alright...But not great.

I think the ending was supposed to be showing how Ray was "breaking loose", doing "crazy dancemoves". But I didn't buy it at all.

If you wanna see an awesome dance scene, watch Little Miss Sunshine. :D

I actually saw quite a few promising dancers in the ballet scenes. Some of them had lovely lines. However the minute Dakota Fanning started to "dance" I had to cringe. I understand that Ray was supposed to be "breaking free," but thank God that girl can act because she is a terrible dancer. She stuck out like a sore thumb in every scene with her dance class.
Also, in response to several other posters on this board:
- Even eight-year-olds who study in prestigious ballet schools ( as I assume Ray is because a. She lives in NYC and b. They refer to their levels as Etages, which only the big classical schools do) are quite good. The standards are high in places like that.
- Ballet is not boring, most people can't see the beauty in it because of MTV making the entire American culture think that the only dance worth watching or doing is the stuff in videos.

i don't think Ray was a good dancer at all, but i don't think that was the point. i think the point was that she was breaking fre, like everyone else is saying. it's just a movie. no one said it had to be perfect.

reply

you guys it wasnt about the standard of dancing who actually would be that pernickity, its just meant to show that molly has taught her to be like she should be, a kid, instead of an adult.

reply

Maybe she wasn't meant to dance well? Maybe that was the point? She liked ballet because she thought it was mature and there were rules to follow. Maybe she didn't actually like dancing at all?

And I agree, ballet isn't boring. But I think it was how seriously Ray was taking the class that made it boring. And maybe she didn't enjoy it like I already said? :L So at the end when she was letting loose and actually having fun with dance, that was the point.

Well, that's my idea anyway :)

They are kids. Give them a break. Don't expect them to be professionals. I danced for a long time, from kindergarten all the way up through high school, and I can't say the kids in the movie looked much better or worse than most kids their age do. If the kids in the movie were perfect dancers, that would make it unrealistic.
