Why did marina not want holly to be with nat?

I never understood why exactly Marina had a problem with Holly seeing her brother, Nat and why she constantly sabotaged the chance of them having any kind of a relationship.

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

reply

I thought that she was just jealous of her and didn't want her to be happy and get what she wanted.
She stirred things up all the time, it was her nature. Getting a thrill out of ruining other people's lives/relationships

Marina knew she couldn't steal Nat the way she stole Daniel from Holly. That's what I thought.

reply

i think it was because if holly found true happiness, then she wouldn't rely on marina as much as she did when they were little. She saw that she was happy with Nat, and she decided that in order to stay the most important figure in Holly's life, that Nat and Holly couldn't date.

thanks :)

yeah i agree i think it was all about control nat actually says it near the end (ish) when he talks about how controlling marina is even of him. separated she can control them and they kind of flutter around her but she knew if they were together they would have something she wasn't included in or part of, and that she couldn't manipulate.

I watched this last night, and agree with your view.

Marina didn't want to be "unneeded" really. She didn't want Holly taking Nat away from her and she didn't want Nat taking Holly away either.

She'd be a third wheel and she wanted to find a way to keep them both under her thumb.

Marina was insecure about Holly, always jealous of her, always trying to outdo her, and its a bit of two things really...one Nat was Marina's, he was hers and that was one thing she had that Holly didn't, her close relationship with her brother, but also as an above poster said, she didn't want to be the third wheel, she didn't want to lose each other to one another, she had to be the center of attention to them both

reply

I agree. Marina loved both Nat and Holly, but did not want them to love each other.

Because then she would feel excluded. They would have each other and not need her any longer.

reply

She just didn't want to be excluded. She knew they always had a 'thing' for eachother but she thought that if they were together they would leave her and she would be a lone. She didn't want to be left. It all came from her Dad abandoning them.

Both Nat and Marina were really attracted to Holly for the same reasons. She was stable, calm, reliable, not emotionally needy and both of them were essentially damaged by their parents. Although I'd say to be fair Marina was far too more messed up.

reply

Like I said.......... she didn't want to be excluded.

reply

She just does not want her friends to have sex with her brother.

I think people miss the point when it comes to Marina...see she was the one who always appeared confident, self assured, and the more beautiful one (in her mind and Holly's mothers to). Both of them were polar opposites of each other, Marina was cocky, outgoing, neurotic and had to be heard, whereas Holly was the more shy, intellectual one. When it came to who would loose their V card first you assumed Marina because of her nature and behavior but when it came down to it the guy meant nothing to her, he was dirty, grubby and she would never see him again after that night. She didn't want to just loose it to anybody and then she saw Holly and her brother together in a way that was more romantic and the way it should be. Marina got upset because she wanted what Holly had and she didnt want to be the only one out of the two still a virgin so she gave it up to that loser and lost her self respect. After that she went wild. Sleeping around with meaningless guys, anything to make her seem like she was better than Holly that she could have things Holly couldn't. But Nat was the one thing Marina couldn't have. Marina didn't have her own version of Nat so she did everything and anything to stop Holly from having something she wanted. Real Love! Sure it made her seem like a biatch at times but I actually felt sorry for her. Underneath her bravado lay a very insecure, frightened girl and luckily once her daughter came along she seemed to be more settled at the end of the film. She was very much like her mother really. Painfully unhappy and she couldnt bare to see her best friend have something she didn't.
