I think people miss the point when it comes to Marina...see she was the one who always appeared confident, self assured, and the more beautiful one (in her mind and Holly's mothers to). Both of them were polar opposites of each other, Marina was cocky, outgoing, neurotic and had to be heard, whereas Holly was the more shy, intellectual one. When it came to who would loose their V card first you assumed Marina because of her nature and behavior but when it came down to it the guy meant nothing to her, he was dirty, grubby and she would never see him again after that night. She didn't want to just loose it to anybody and then she saw Holly and her brother together in a way that was more romantic and the way it should be. Marina got upset because she wanted what Holly had and she didnt want to be the only one out of the two still a virgin so she gave it up to that loser and lost her self respect. After that she went wild. Sleeping around with meaningless guys, anything to make her seem like she was better than Holly that she could have things Holly couldn't. But Nat was the one thing Marina couldn't have. Marina didn't have her own version of Nat so she did everything and anything to stop Holly from having something she wanted. Real Love! Sure it made her seem like a biatch at times but I actually felt sorry for her. Underneath her bravado lay a very insecure, frightened girl and luckily once her daughter came along she seemed to be more settled at the end of the film. She was very much like her mother really. Painfully unhappy and she couldnt bare to see her best friend have something she didn't.
