Question regarding the Four Swords.

Okay I have been considering buying this game at a used game store for a while now. Thing is I need to ask about the Four Swords part, is it only a multiplayer game or does it have a single player version? Oh...one other thing do they do anything different with Link to the Past? I keep getting mixed answers on both parts so I figured I'd ask here.
