One of the scariest scenes ever

I don't know if this has been talked about already, but the first few scenes of the movie are really very scary. In particular, I'm talking about the scene where the brother and sister are having a casual conversation and going down a normal highway road, with the nice row of houses, and they just glance to their side and see someone dumping something wrapped in sheets with blood on them, down a chute. And when they stare at him, he stops what he is doing, and.....just looks at them. I don't know for some reason this scene really creeps me out, more so than any gory scene in the movie. Maybe because it seems like such a real possibilty- you are driving down a highway, and you casually glance and see something that has horrific implications.

That's my money scene right there,I felt my arm hairs standing up when I first saw that scene,I don't know why exactly I'm creeped out either by that sequence, maybe it reminds me of the horror pulps that I've read when I was younger, all I know is that I'm still chilled even today by this particular scene....

Oh yes, that and when they're talking about what they saw 'he was dropping something down the pipe wrapped in a sheet' 'wrapped in rope and a sheet' 'with red stains on it'.

I agree too. The scary part is probably magnified b/c you're alone (except for sis) on a country road about to be chased by this thing. Plus your car is a piece of crap...

BTW, the old church has a haunted look....

reply

I agree that scene is very scary. Chilling.

What's even more chilling is how it's eyes are locked on them, even as they are moving, his stare were very scary for sure.

Dude I agree. I was just saying it seems like a real possibility that you see something like this. I was not talking about what one would do after seeing something like this.

reply

Yeah except before they could get anywhere NEAR the police, the guy started chasing them in the truck again, they didn't really have a lot of options at that point.

Though another 'in the movies' moments, this ALWAYS happens in horror movies, cell phones NEVER work.

I thought that was the scariest scene in the movie to be honest. I don't know why but it just affects ms more than any other scene. A close second would be the first time the truck speeds up on them to get them out of his way. Perhaps it's so scary because those 2 scenes seem so real and especially seem creepy to people who have had to drive long distances.

More like the only remotely scary scene in this entire stupid movie.

They knew they were far away from the cops, and they wanted to make sure the guy was not still alive. They even talk about that...if he was alive and they just kept driving, he would be dead. Their might have been an opportunity to save him.

Which makes them incredibly heroic. I wish I could know for sure that I would be that selfless in that situation, but I won't know unless it ever happens.

There's a difference between those who feel safest in the light and those who feel safest in the dark. Which are you?

reply

What they did was very heroic and that's what makes the climax that more tragic.

Yes same here.

I first saw this on Showtime years ago. So I bought the DVD. I let my friends borrow it. Without me telling them, the first thing they said to me after was "DAMN!! The scene where he just stares at them scared the Hell out of me."

I don't know what to say about this oddest of scenes except that it
Freaked Me Out !!!

I was relaxing, just letting it happen, when I saw this freak just standing there staring at the passing car. Shivers... then when Darry does his stupid horror movie thing (Trish says it best - "you know that part in scary movies where somebody does something incredibly stupid? This is that part!") and winds up in a room with... umm... human tapstry. If that's me? I'm outta there. Then again, Justin Long does a really cool deer-in-the-headlights stare so who knows. What I do know is that this is one fun ride!

I thought that scene was fairly typical. At that point it still seemed like I Know What You Did Last Summer/Scream, to me. It wasn't until later when I realized it was an actual monster that I started to get a little jumpy (in a good way).

I agree. I've been a huge horror movie buff since I was five and no horror movie, aside from Strangeland, had ever even remotely creeped me out. But I remember after seeing this when I was eleven, I was genuinely terrified after that scene and it stuck with me for a while. It was just so creepy and realistic and expertly done. To this done one of my favorite scenes in horror movie history.
