What is the Current Political Climate in the Dominican Republic? would It be possible to make Such a Film , There ???

I agree with you. It gets so tiring to see Hollywood make these stupid generic movies of Latin America as if it were all one big culture and peoples.

The music they use sounds more like Cuban in the 1940's, the actors appear like various central Americans certainly but not Dominicans, and Salma Hayek....well...sure, she's beautiful....but doesn't fit the part.

Otherwise, the movie is good in spite of these very distracting flaws.

Very good point alialas! As I watched the movie not knowing anything about it I thought for sure they were in Cuba! Never would have guessed Dominican R!

A lot of what you saw in the movie is either authentic or a pretty good replica. The music you say sounds like Cuban is authentic Dominican Merengue, the university still exist (much larger and 5 minutes from my DR home- try GoogleEarth). The panoramic shots of the roads and houses are very similar to what you would have seen back in the day - you can even see that today in many areas. In the beginning of the movie they recited the Dominican national anthem.
The prison still exist. It's called "la victoria" and that's where they send the bad seeds. I'm not really sure where it is located but somewhere in the east.

To the comment about "...Cuba ...Never DR," that's like saying "Indiana ... Never Ohio." Cuba and DR aren't that far away from each other in terms of architecture, culture, food, terrain, weather, language, religion, so on. DR is far far away from the era depicted in the movie. It seems you guys may not have known that it is the largest tourist destination in the carribean, that there are plans to build the tallest building in latin america, there are bunch of designer golf courses (donald trump, jack nicklaus, Sherraton), home of designer Oscar de la Renta, too many resorts, country clubs, whale watching destination, and so on.

While we do have many great things a good chunk of the country is still developing. There still exist racial tensions with illegal immigrants (mainly Haitians). Many people do not realize that there is more to this issue than just skin color. DR fought for it's independence from Haiti in 1844. That is not too long ago when you think about it. It's about 4 or 5 generations, and some years before we had the American civil.

DR is affect by the same issues every other country in this world faces. I encourage everyone to visit the country and learn more about it. It can be pretty cheap to vacation there. Drivers there can be reckless (even more so than the taxi's in nyc). Summer season is usually pretty hectic. The current president's name Lionel Fernandez. He grew up in NYC and graduated from Harvard (on scholarship I believe). This is his third term in office. He is a very popular and progressive politician of the PLD party.

if you want to pick up another story with the history of DR during Trujillo try "The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao" by Junot Diaz

yes, and i agree it should have been made in te dominican republic. Michelle Rodriguez (fast and the furious), who is half dominican is starring in a movie about minerva mirabal titled "tropico de sangre aka tropic of blood"

this one sounds more authentic... it's being filmed in the DR, has mostly Dominican actors in it and the surviving sister is advising on the project... although if the one with Hayek didn't gather any recognition, it's doubtful one with Rodriguez, who doesn't have such a high profile and is mostly known for action movies, will garner any media interest... I'll certainly will see it though

I agree it should have been made in the DR with at the very least Dominican extras. I don't remember seeing a single black person in the movie when the DR's population is largely black and mulato.

I'm from the DR and people there are still afraid of Trujillo. For the longest time, they wouldn't allow movies or books about him to be sold or rented there. This movie portrayed the situation back then pretty well. They kind of glossed over it in the history books, trying to paint him as a great leader.
