Disappointing

Well, I was disappointed. I like JLH, A. Baldwin's ok and I love A. Hopkins, but they just couldn't save this movie. It should have been soooo much better with that kind of actors in it, right? JLH could have been so much better as the Devil! Where was the charm? Liz made a much better Devil I'm sorry to say.

Wouldn't bother with this movie!

I thought that it was just dreadful. There was nothing that made this film special, horrible screenplay, camera work and poor casting. Hewitt looked nothing like Liz Hurley in bedazzled, she looked anorexic to me. Also it’s a huge disappointment of Baldwin and his directorial debut.

Hewitt completely ruined this film.

It would only have been average anyway, but she was beyond dreadful. I literally stopped watching during the end courtroom scene, as soon as she started talking.

I'm in the middle of watching it and overall it is pretty lame. JLH is not good at all as the devil. A better actress could have made this a very juicy part. There are some awkward transitions and effects. Since post production was not done, I suppose the Yari company got it for a song and spent very little to fix it up. I was expecting a really strong dark comedy/drama. I'm still in the middle of it but it's funny to see what Baldwin thinks about what success means in 2001 (the time when the movie was shot) and the debate of being a great artist and being successful. I guess it was better off in the vault. Even though I'm still in the middle of it, it's strange that Alec is clearly carrying the picture even though he is billed third (maybe by his choice since he wanted to be removed as a director but it would be impossible to not list him as an actor.

The movie was stolen from Baldwin and butchered by people who wished to dumb the film down in an already scary 2001 climate, that explains the funky scene transitions.
It also explains why Baldwin wanted his name off the directing credits.
Despite it being "unrecognizable" to Baldwin, i quite liked it. Not near as good as the original The Devil and Daniel Webster, but still very good.

Too bad they will never let it see a DVD release.

It's already been released to DVD in a few countries, firstly in South America and also in Germany and Poland. You can get the German DVD edition quite easily and quickly:

Yari Film Group was going to release it in the USA when this happened:

Netflix has been airing the movie too but we'll probably never see the original uncut version anywhere.
