thoughts on remake?

i've literally just seen the original thai film and it blew me away. i don't really want to see the remake since remakes are horrible (even if its shot-by-shot) so i was just wondering if anyone here has seen both of them and can share insights on the remake???

reply

I liked the origional better.
the remake has alot more money in it, and nicolas cage is pretty cool and all, but the story from the origional is much better, imo.

reply

Remakes generally ruin the original...

Reboots on the other hand, are excellent :p

reply

Well, on average you're right. The average remake was made with cost and profit in mind instead of respecting the source material.

And Bangkok Dangerous with Nicolas Cage was probably made in that vein of thinking, however, I think they did an alright job with it.

I thought it was going to be a terrible film, but it was actually alright. I think it was the pacing and set which made me like it because the acting and story weren't exactly stellar.

The original (this one) is much better. The remake just isn't convincing; Nic Cage explains at the beginning how he does what he does, and what he mustn't do, and then proceeds to do everything he shouldn't. Duh.

reply

The original is overrated, while the remake is underrated.

Don't bother on my account. I think people who write reviews are like people who write diaries - it's more about them, really.

I do it with every review, and you're probably right. Most of the review is not so much that it's good or bad, but why it annoyed me.

So many films, so little time ... :)

IMO the orginal version is only an average flick, but considering it was a low-budget film, shot back in 1999...

Now, there are no excuses for the awful remake. They had money, they had a big name (Nicolas Cage), they had Hollywood's machinery behind them, etc. Yet the movie is worse than the original on every level (except on special effects and flashy things). Can you explain it?

BD 1999: 6.5/10
BD 2008: 4/10

reply

I saw the Nic Cage's version and it sucks.

just picked up the original DVD, hope it's much better.

finished it, and it's just as dull as the remake. basically a attempt to be John Woo+Kai Wai Wong, but way too amateurish.
