Meaning of the symbols on people's faces.

A lot of people had symbols on their faces through the movie, I was wondering if anyone knew what they were? I caught two of them, his therapist had the "ohm" symbol on top of his head, and I believe another man had a symbol for mercury or something on his face, and some others had the symbols for the planets on them. I'm not sure what the others meant. What is the significance or meaning for them being there?

And by the way, I liked this movie. I also have agoraphobia and I could totally relate to his story, and I think it was pretty accurate for people with this disorder, too.

The director (or screenwriter) mentioned this in the making-of featurette. IIRC (all the way back to last night!), it's basically a social fad, and indicates membership in a sort of "tribe." It gives people a sense of belonging to something, and hence a better sense of identity, in an age where so much interpersonal contact is online rather than in person.
