Which side is the protagonist on?

I haven't seen this film, but read and enjoyed Ambrose Bierce's short story. Anyway, a question:

The plot summary posted here says the protagonist is a Confederate soldier, but in Bierce's story he is a Unionist. Did the Scotts flip the sides around when they made this film, or is the plot summary in error?
