This was great in aspect because...

It was like having a terrence malick film come out unexpectedly. It's a beautiful, lyrical, voice-over-loose narrative film about life.

I do love this movie for the reasons you listed above, but when I watched Days of Heaven, I was unimpressed. Maybe other Malick films are a little better, but I thought George Washington was a better film. There was more character development and a more well written screenplay. Although I thought that the cinematography for Days of Heaven was excellent, the script was poor. The film relied only on it's setting, while George Washington had wonderful characters and plot also.

reply

exactly. malick is the most overrated director of all times. i was terribly dissapointed by "badlands" and "days of heaven" because they only relied on great cinematography and had no substance whatsoever. "george washington" was better than both films combined.

Where are you, Mount Everest? Give me some Everest.

Malick is one of the greatest film directors of all time. Film making does not have to be about creating a plot-driven narrative. It's about doing something that is interesting. While Malick's films do have wonderful cinematography, that is not the only factor that makes them stand out. His directorial style is meditative, methodical, and precise in terms of how he treats the tiny nuances of his stories and characters. DGG is not as confident in his directorial style, although I have yet to see Snow Angels.

reply

Indeed. It was kind of tragic when he abandoned this kind of filmmaking, but I'm glad he seems to be getting back to it.
